I am in the trying to get better at long range/Precision shooting, up to 1000 yards.  I cannot seem to find any sort of classes or instructors in the houston area.

What do you guys know?  Who do you recommend?

Thanks,

If you are just starting out:

Appleseedinfo.org

Will teach standing, sitting and prone with a challenge to make rifleman.

The fee for 2010 Appleseed Events is unchanged from last year: $45 a day or $70 for the weekend.

Start with a .22lr for a very inexpensive experience.

I don't know about the Houston area, but there are at least two outfits which have ranges out to 1000 yards:

- Rifles Only which is near Kingsville
- Tac Pro Shooting Center which is west of Ft Worth about an hour.

I don't have any experience with Rifles Only, their web-presence is definitely high-speed low drag.

I have been to Tac Pro for his precision rifle class. I hit a 5 inch clay bird at 1000 yards on the third day, twice.  On purpose. [1]

I imagine Tiger Valley has some classes on precision rifle as well, Google them up.

Another 1000 yard range is opening/has opened in Williamson County just west of Liberty Hill, no classes that I am aware of yet.

[1] I struggled on the 1K line with my rifle for a day and half.  I was shooting a Savage 10FP with a 20" barrel and it wasn't generating enough FPS to keep the rounds supersonic to the target.  At the end of the third day of class, I borrowed my buddies rifle and broke two clays with five shots.  It turns out that elevation is the easy part, the hard part is judging wind and shooting when it's time to shoot.

I have heard of both Rifles Only and Tiger Valley.  I am a little closer to Tiger Valley.

What I am really looking for is someone in the Houston area that can teach me technique on one of our local ranges.  I know American Shooting center has a range out to 600 yards.

My rifle should be good to go at 1000yds.  I have a Remington 700 5R 24" barrel with a US Optics SN-3 3.2-17x Tpal.  I also reload my own ammo so I shoot a 175 SMK at 2640fps but I am thinking of bumping up my velocity to 2700 if I can.

There is a small group of us that shoot out at ASC 600 yards on Saturday or Sunday mornings.  We might not be operators or teachers, we can hit the targets out there with regularity.

That sounds like it would be fun.  When is the next time you will be going, and what time does everybody show up?

Probably in about a week or 2.  Not this weekend for sure.  My rifle is at the smiths having a new barrel installed and the stock is being repainted.  Then the other shooter we go  with is out of town on vacation this week.  Shoot me a PM next week, we usually don't go too long without shooting.

There is also a new range in Huntsville that is being built that will go out to 1k.  It will be a private range and only open for practice once a month.  I am down with that since there is going to be steel there to hit.

Got room for a Dragunov shooter? I don't get out much to ASC these days since I joined Impact Zone but I do enjoy some 300m+ shooting when I get a chance, plus would be cool to meet some local Arfcommers

Join Bayou Rifles, a private club with ranges in west Houston and just south of Pearland.

There is a match at 300, 600, 800, 900, 1000 yards pretty much every weekend.

Go to one of the matches and ask questions, and ask for help.

The experienced shooters are more than willing to help you. Actually shoot long distance, not talk about it on the internet!

Actually go shoot at long distance, with experienced long range shooters, and soak up the experience!

Thanks for the posts everyone.  This is some really good information.

I am a member at Bayou.  It's about 10 minutes away from my house.  While it does have a 1K range, you now have to qualify if you don't shoot the matches there at 600+ yards.  I have been too lazy to schedule a time for someone to be there to qualify me.  But I am content at shooting at steal at ASC.  Plus I sometimes get to go to my friends ranch to shoot past 1k if I wanted to.  The reason I don't shoot at Bayou more often is that you can only shoot at paper.

My buddy and I regularly shoot at ASC at the 200-600 yard range.  Best thing is to learn the basic fundamentals and then practice, practice, practice.  The Appleseed suggestion was good.  I mostly shoot iron sights, but I do bring out my LR-308 or AR-10 everyonce in a while (both scoped).

I would also like more info on the Huntsville range.  I went down to the Bayou rifle range to watch the 1000 yd match this morning and it takes me about an hour to get there.  I think the Huntsville range should be about the same.  I would really like to here about these facilities.
