If I purchase a firearm from a private individual, do I have to register that weapon in any way?

Thanks

Not in Indiana.  There is no registration of firearms except class 3 weapons.

So this way would keep me off all those pesky federal forms that say I have an AR?

Where, in Indiana, do you have to register class 3 weapons?

Federal Law does not prohibit the private sale of Long Guns or Hands by individuals, nor does Indiana.

All Title 2 (Class III) items (Machinegunes, silencers, etc.) must be transfered only after approval by the NFA Branch of the BATF&E, reguardless.  Out of state transfer require the use of a Class III Licensed Dealer.

Part of this process requires indviduals to obtain the signature of their County Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) on the forms prior to sending them for approval.  The exact weapon, etc. and serial number is listed on these forms, so maybe this is could be considered registration but it is not offically considered such.

They are not registered by the State of Indiana but the BATFE knows exactly where each and every Class III weapon is.  If it's not in the possession of the registered owner someone is committing a felony.
