| Wow, I took a ride up the west side hwy today to sneak a peek at the QM2. Its a BIG ship!!! I wish that I could have seen her steaming in to NY harbor. Anybody else see it yet? |
| All I know is the damn thing caused monumental traffic tie-ups from Brooklyn to mid-Manhattan West until it was berhted...saw it after FINALLY getting out of work...it's big alright, but what is this 200' measurement (height)I keep hearing? Is that from the keel, or what? |
|
Frank...when we speak of a building's height, we can't count the basement level(s). All I'm saying is, a commercial building has 12 ft floors usually...that boat sure didn't look like it was 180' above the water.... Sorry, not impressed, then again, at least it's British and not French. |
The traffic was unbelievable yesterday. One of the worst days yet |
Sheeet.....13' is as good as a mile....besides the Guinea Gangplank actually has a slightly lower roadway than most of the others because they wanted to limit the grade angle from the approaches and Staten Island is comparatively low.... |

Yeah, and Frank,...it doesn't matter how big a ship is when you're in the Bay of Biscay or, goin' around the Horn. The sea will humble all of 'em! The merchant ship I was on, the SS Seatrain Washington was, if memory serves me, 157.5 ft. at the wing of the bridge. One trip, we lost almost 200ft. of guard rail, 6 trucks and an ambulance over the side off the spar deck. (the tanks were on the main deck and, the 105's we're in the lower holds.) All in all, pretty cool! ....Ships are cool!... John ex. merchant sailor |
