Can you legally sell a pistol FTF without going through a FFL like you can with a rifle?

Yes,you can sell pistols FTF in Virginia. I'm not sure if the one gun a month rule applies to non-FFL sales however.
Check VA code online for more information.

Yes. Not a problem here for FTF between VA residents. One gun a month is gone anyway for permit holders. I doubt there are too many VA members here that are not CCW permit holders.

FTF is good on pistols and long guns in VA and I know of no limit for private sales.
An armed society is a polite society.

I sold FTF to someone I know very well, who, as far as I could tell, was a solid honest person. Question, is there any obligation on my part to verify that they could legally purchase a firearm?

For hanguns...yes it does...unless the buyer is a CHP holder...

you may want to get the name, address etc, incase a trace connects you to the gun, mostly for your own peace of mind (and CYA)
but i don't think you are obligated to do that
