I would like to start by saying hello to the New England hometown forum. I look forward to moving back to New England some day joining you guys in the past time of clearing snow. Here is my question. I have a little bit of land in Penobscot County west of Toddy Pond. It is about 12 acres on a private road. Most of my neighbors have about the same amount of land as I do. The land behind my property is all wooded and probably several hundred acres with no one on it. I plan on building a house on it some time in the future when I finish school. But I was wondering if you guys think this is enough land for me to shoot on. What’s the attitude of people about guns like in that area of the country? Are people pretty easy going about guns and hunting or are they up tight about it? I know some of New England has very strict gun laws. But from what I have seen Maine, VT and NH are not too bad. I know in Georgia where I am now people don’t care too much about things like shooting guns if you are safe, legal and respectful about it. What’s it like in Maine in Penobscot County area? Thanks guys, any opinions would be great. I cant wait to be up there and have a little space to myself. But the last thing I want to do is piss off all my neighbors that are trying to enjoy there space. |
| Are you talking the Toddy Pond by Surry? If it's anything like the rest of Maine, it all depends on if the neighbors are locals or from away. Easy to tell. If there's a POSTED sign every ten feet and an Obama sign rotting into the front lawn....... They're from away....... |

If there's a POSTED sign every ten feet and an Obama sign rotting into the front lawn....... They're from away....... thats the one. But i am on the north west side. Closer to East Orland if i recall. about the the people "from away..." I actually spent several hours talking with some of the locals when I was up looking for land. They were a little stand offish at first. But once they realized I was just a regular working guy they warmed up fast. They made it clear that they were a little sick of the guys moving up from other areas and trying to build bike paths and complaining about hunting. I let them know that I had no interest in trying to change it. I actually like it just the way it is. once we talked for a while people were really nice. One of the guys actually drove me around in his car showing me around the area. |
| I grew up on 1st Toddy in East Orland. Most people are gun friendly and as posted earlier you can tell who isn't quite easily. They are from away and will probably be driving a volvo. (Stereotype yes but accrate) Unfortunately there are more of these people in recent years. On a side note, some of the people who post their land will still let you hunt it if you are a local and ask them. They just put the signs up to keep the Massholes and such away from their land during hunting season. Still no worries, 12 acres is plenty of land to shoot on and that area is usually pretty hilly. Shoot into a hill or set up a good backstop and on the off chance you have some bad neighbors, they can pound sand. |

I think one of the things that I like about the area and the people is that there seems to be an attitude of independence. They don’t like people in there business and they don’t really care to be involved in others business. People just kind of do there own thing. I really like that. I don’t really like people in my space and at the same time I like to let other people live how they want. I guess it is a little of “live and let live”. I could be wrong about this impression but this is what I felt when I was up there. thanks for letting me know what you think. |

I was born and raised in Blue Hill, and we had a camp on Toddy when I was growing up. My family still has a summer house there, on the west end.
We shoot every few months up there, and most of the people that own property around us are from the area or from other parts of Maine. Get set up against a hill, use a good backstop, and you'll be fine. You can also go to the Blue Hill Rile and Pistol Club on Range Road. It's tiny, but a great place to shoot. |
