I was on the CMMG website just looking around. When I look at their complete upper page you can choose an upper, but then there are options on some things that I want help understanding. Any help will be appreciated. I like the upper below, but which setup options do I change??? CMMG 14.5 Mid-Length Upper w/Permanent Phantom New 14.5" mid-length upper w/permanent phantom hider. Permanent phantom hider brings OAL barrel length to legal 16” This upper is complete with bolt, carrier and charging handle. CMMG semi auto bolt carriers have the shrouded firing pin to protect against hammer wear. Upper receivers are "T" marked and include extended feed ramp cuts. Features include gov't profile mid-length barrel with 11 degree recessed target crown, triangle handguard cap, chrome lined 5.56mm chamber and bore, 1/7 twist, parkerizing under “F” marked forged front sight base and magnetic particle testing on every barrel. When ordering with optional gas block, barrels will not be drilled for taper pins. Barrel is marked CMMG MPC 5.56 NATO 1/7. Receiver: Bolt and Carrier Group: Bolt and Carrier Group Upgrade: Charging Handle Upgrade: Feed Ramp Option: Sight Post Option: Front Sight Base/Gas Block Option: Forward Assist Option: Handguard Option: Charging Handle Latch Options: Thanks to all for helping the "UNEDUCATED" OLL parts shopper. |

I'm assuming that you're going with a fixed magazine solution vice a pistol-gripless one like the MonsterMan grip otherwise you'll want to lose the Phantom flash suppressor and replace it with a muzzle brake. You will have to have three parts added to your upper at a minimum: charging handle, bolt carrier and the bolt (complete) itself. There's no reason to get the bolt or carrier chromed or otherwised pimped out. If they offer an extended charging handle some enjoy those but there are a few different types out there and some are better than others. Skip the feed ramps. Leave the forward assist stock. I like the stock handguards and follow Jim Crews and the USMC's shooting disipline with no forward grips. What are you going to do for sights? If the upper in a M-4 flat top and you plan on using scope rings to hang an optical scope off the top for plinking you'll not want a front sight. However if you're flattop is going to be used with a red dot sight you may want a normal A2 front sight tower so that you can use the iron sights as a back up. If you're using a carry handle A2 upper you'll want the normal stock front sight tower installed. |

It all depends on what you want to do with the rifle/weapon. I have close quarter battle, long range "sniper", target, and designated riflemen's weapons/rifles. The AR-15 can be made into everything from a lightweight fast moving CQB weapon or into an amazingly accurate longrange target rifle - and lots of stuff in between. Depending on what you what to do with the rifle you need to build it with different parts. I would caution you that you only buy quality once. Spending an extra $50 on a weapon that you're going to keep for ten years or bet you life on is cheap insurance. I have always liked Armalite, Bushmaster, and Colt - "ABC" companies. Colt tends to be difficult to find and over priced so I'm pretty much an Armalite/Bushmaster guy. Figure that going on the cheap you can build a rifle for $750 while going with Armalite or Bushmaster first line quality is going to run you another 7%. That's an easy decission for me to make for you. If I were building a general purpose weapon for plinking and home defense I would do this: Receiver: A1, A2, A3 - recievers are either A2 or M4 (normally) meaning with a carry handle or with a flat top w/intergrated scope mounting rail. For general purpose I like the carry handle - for either CQB or long distance shooting I would go flat top. Bolt & Carrier Group: Semi-Auto Carrier - yes, semi-auto only and you don't need anything fancy. Bolt & Carrier Group Upgrade: LMT, E.G.R.E.S.S - see above. Charging Handle Upgrade: PRI-Gas Buster - never found a need for one. Feed Ramp Option: Comes with anodized. Can get No Ramps or Polished - again never found a need for them. Sight post option: Comes with A2. Can get A1 or KNS(2 Types). I like the A2's Front Sight Base/Gas Block Option: F Marked front side base is standard.(15 Options) Handguard Option: M4 Single Heatshield is standard. ( Multiple Options ). The M4's are nice. Charging Handle Latch Options: Standard Or TAC Latch.... GEN1 or 2. Here's where I'll actually violate mil-spec and go with a larger latch. The reason I feel comfortable violating mil-spec here is that it's not a "moving part" - well it moves - but if a large latch failed what could be the worst that could happen - you'd have to use the thing like the smaller mil-spec one. |
