I will be looking for another job in a few months, and Illinois is on my list of places for searching. My concern is with the gun laws.

If I moved to IL, I would have to obtain a DL, then apply for a FOID, then I could apply for a CC permit. Is this right? With the FOID, do I have to register any of my firearms?

For my pistols, I have plenty of high capacity magazines. Are these currently legal in Illinois, including the Chicago area?

I do not own any black rifles, so I'm not too concerned about that.

Are there any other restrictions I should be aware of? What about on having reloading supplies and ammo shipped?

Stay out of cook county and don't worry about it.

You have the correct sequence of events: DL, FOID, CCL.  I'm not sure what you do with your firearms between getting your DL and getting your FOID, though.  I think there's a grace period.  Somebody else can fill in that detail.

For the most part, firearm registration is no longer required anywhere in Illinois.  I believe Chicago (or is it Cook County?) cops (or all first responders?) must register their personal firearms, though.

As part of the CCL law, current handgun laws were established to be all at the state level, so local handgun magazine restrictions were preempted.  Larger capacity magazines are GTG for handguns.  The same is not true for rifle mags, but as Ivan said, if you avoid Cook County, you should be good to go for that, too.

I believe there are no restrictions on having things shipped to you, except for what local laws may say.  You'll probably need to send images of your FOID and DL to a vendor for ordering ammo and firearms.  I'm not sure about reloading supplies, though.

You didn't mention NFA.  SBRs are allowed if you have a C&R FFL, but suppressors are a no-go.

When you purchase a firearm in IL, do they have to perform a NICS check or does the FOID take the place of that?

[#5]
In IL the FFL uses FTIP which is Illinois own background check program which takes the place of NICS.

What part of IL are you looking in?

It is our understanding that all things handgun are preempted state wide and your pistols should be ok...That doesn't mean someone couldn't charge you under a ban...it means you would win in court.

The FFL will call the Illinois State Police with your info and FOID number in place of the NICS check. There is a 24 hour wait for long guns, and a 72 hour wait for handguns or other (ie. stripped lowers).

You apply for the FOID and CCL online, which is much better than the old paper form for FOID or the original CCL website: https://www.ispfsb.com/

My field is educational technology, so any place with a university or college.

Chicago area wouldn't be my first choice, but a job is a job.

Chicago is a fine place to live inside the right neighborhoods. If you're a social person, you'll love it. That said, no long guns with detachable magazines or built in magazines (including shotgun tubes) over 5 rounds. For handguns, the sky is the limit. I'm not sure where that leaves AR pistols. They may be GTG but I remember reading about a bill that was going to close that loop-hole.

You should check out Central Illinois.  Bloomington, Champaign, and Peoria have large universities and none of the Chicago gun issues.

Edwardsville and Carbondale in Southern Illinois would be good to check out as well.

Aren't there like 3-4 colleges or more in the St. Louis metro?  Why in the hell would you want to live in this depressed state?  It's being ruined by liberals for freedom and finances.  Chicago will be the next Detroit, which will suck the entire state down the tubes with it.

Good luck in your job search OP, we need as many pro gun people as we can get here to counteract Shitcago.

There's a lot of universities outside of Cook county. I wish you the best in your search for a new job.

Illinois gun laws aren't as bad as GD says they are. Yes the FOID card system sucks and the waiting period sucks but you can buy whatever black rifle you want here without issue (Chicago aside) along with magazines.

Yeah, there are. But I live in the sticks now and I really want to move to a larger city. St Louis is on my list, but if I cannot find a job there, Illinois would be next.

I'm also checking Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Yeah, and now that you guys have CC permits, it's not that bad. You guys made progress with the CC permits, maybe you can have the FOID card go away next.

Funny how life works.  I live in a city of about 60k in the metro St. Louis area Illinois side, and I want to move to MO out to the sticks.  Grass is always greener and all that.

Different strokes for different folks. But I think it's really just the town I live in. Nothing but poor folks here. I live near KC and hate having to drive an hour to the city for anything more than Walmart or McDonalds. I love ethnic food, going shopping, going to the museum, etc.

The wife and I would eventually like to build a log cabin on a piece of property. Can't do that in the city.

I have family in Columbia and that area seems nice. For sure it's not rural MO. But Illinois isn't as bad a people make it out once you leave the NE corner of the state.

I went to college in Bloomington and Champaign during the early to mid 90's.  Of the two towns Bloomington was much nicer
and less gang and violence problems.  I got knocked unconscious and robbed walking home from a bar in Champaign.

I've heard recently more bad things happening in Bloomington, but I wouldn't have a problem living there in the right areas.

Columbia, IL is really nice.  It's nice enough that it has the highest real estate taxes in the county.  It's also right across the river from South County St. Louis, which is another nice area.  But again, even those denizens down state are still shackled by the laws made in Cook County.

You can tell exactly where the population is in this state, simply by looking at this county by county election map from 2012:  http://www.politico.com/2012-election/results/president/illinois/

Look at all the Red Republican counties, but Obummer still won the state vote by population.

In cook county alone:

B. Obama (i)Dem74.0%1,439,123
M. RomneyGOP24.6%479,204

Like I said, I'm leaving...  It's not if, just when.

You can apply for FOID and CCL simultaneously, which should speed up the CCL time.

Take the IL mandated CCL training class ASAP so you have that when you are ready to apply.
