A friend's father, who owns a big name jewelery store in the suburban chicago area, offered me a job as a security guard the other day. Has anyone here gone through the process of getting an armed security certification in IL? I have a few years of military service but I've been out since 2006 and I'm not currently leo or anything either. I've read up on some of the requirements, but I'm not sure exactly where I should go to get certified. Any recommendations?

Look into a "Blue Card" certification. Though now I think it is called a "Brown Card".  Also known as the "40 hour certification". Issued by the state.

You need one to be armed as a security guard in Illinois.

Be warned though, there used to be a number of shady outfits that offered the course. All part of the Cook County government patronage scams.

Last I heard. it is called a "tan card" and you must be a full time employee of a security company to get one. The security company will send you to the certification class. They do security certifications at Midwest Sporting Goods in Lyons. They might be able to tell you more.

Any ideas on which ones are good and which I should avoid? I've been doing some reading and I think I have a pretty good understanding now of the prerequisites for the license, but I'm not sure about some of these companies. Most of their websites are sparse or very amateur.

I'll give Midwest a call and see if they can give me any more info. The full time requirement might be a deal killer though, as I'd have to give up my current job. Thanks guys!

Does this position require a uniform and open carry?

Casual dress with concealed carry?

In IL concealed carry at home or your place of business is legal, also while visiting friend at his place if he approves you carrying during your visit.

Can you legally visit the jewelry store and be armed as an employee?

Comparing jewelry store to local gun shop where everybody is armed.

Could get interesting.

Good Luck.

To work as an armed security officer in Illinois you need to obtain a PERC or "blue" card and a Firearms Control Card ot "tan" card.

The PERC you can get on your own through the application process at This site

The FCC or Tan card must be applied for by the security company you work for.  It requires a 40 firearm training class and a qualification shoot.

While it is technically legal for you to carry in your friends store with his permission.........you better get some serious insurance incase you need to fight or kill someone and a customer or employee gets hurt in the process.

The company I work for Part-time carries a huge insurance policy on us in-case......be a shame for you to lose everything in a lawsuit.

I am not sure the store can get him the tan card. I think you have to have a private detective involved in the organization to get the license that allows your employer to get you the tan card. It's not impossible that the "friend" is a PD, but not real likely either.

OTOH, AFAIK, it is not illegal for armed guards to work as armed guards w/o working for a PD agency. They just can't carry to and from work.
