Just wondering does it matter what kind of muzzle break I can use in NY...as long as it is perm.

Was under the assumption that Comps are OK and Hiders are not.

Thanks guys, search didn't turn anything recent up.  And Fridays braincells are tired.

My understanding- needs to be a brake, not a hider and should not be 22mm in diameter (in case you want to launch grenades- a lot of the comp made during the fed ban are 19mm)

not this.

compensators/brakes are the same thing.  generally speaking a brake has a closed front end like this...

where as a hider has an open front end like this...

obligatory

Hmmm, I wondering about that whole closed front end thing. I just keep seeing these guys from Jersey come over to PA and buy a no ban upper and load up to go home. A few that were obviously .mil I've stepped in and informed them that if they take it back to Mcguire, they are taking a risk. I've got a little shop there in Bristol, and sometimes do some converting for folks, but the brake's always screw me because I can't keep parts like that in stock. So my question is:

If I were to weld a washer to the front end of an A2 flashhider, would that at least pass muster until the right parts could be ordered?? I'm not worried about re-doing the pin and weld, the way I do it makes it a snap to swap it out if you have the right tools.

I bet an AR with an A2 FH that has a washer welded onto the end has a certain type of trailer park charm to it.

You can also have crowned barrels with no muzzle attachment.

These have the simultaneous benefit of not-looking-like-a-flash-hider and not deafening everyone around you while shooting it.

Thanks for the reply guys.  I kinda like the pricey tactical comps for looks, but I think I would only use it one of my builds.  The other might get just a thread protector.

As I believe all barrels have a crown.  so did the post above this mean to just use a tread cover?  if not show me what you mean, thanks.

and I have to second the sticky for the smaller gray area FAQs.  I read the laws text but as I'm not a lawyer it needs further clarification.
