Spent a bit of time a the H&H range today since the temps have dropped a little.  It was still uncomfortably hot but not brutal like it was not long ago.

So I test fired my new Benelli M1 Super 90 today for the first time. Using 00 buck and, holy hell, that thing caused some nasty flashbacks of the police academy shotgun qualification day.  Frickin' trick man, that hurt lol.  I shot two rounds,  had a flashback of qualification day, and I was done.  My bff fired like six rounds but she was really trying to prove me wrong because I told her shooting these shells is not fun.  She said she liked shooting it but no way I believe that crap.  She got the beginning of a nasty bruise on her shoulder within minutes of shooting it.  I'm betting it's gonna be a whopper by morning.

My trip also spawned another question for you guys.  One of the guns I was shooting was my 3" GP100 357 mag.  My standard target ammo for it is American Eagle 158 grain jacketed soft points.  When shooting them there's a pretty decent kick with some stinging and is pretty loud but not much muzzle flash.  Today I also brought some new stuff to try.  It was BVAC 180 grain Bear Loads (advertised as being designed for large game hunting).  I really expected it to have more kick but it had even less kick, significantly less.  The only difference is the bear load had a huge muzzle flash...it looks bad ass.  So my question is, if the round is that much more powerful why didn't it kick harder??

The 180gr load was more than likely using a slower burning powder and tailored for a longer barrel to develop more velocity. The hugh muzzle flash was the powder burning outside of the barrel, so you had less kick. Try that load in a 6" or longer barrel where it can build up more velocity and I bit it will kick more.

That makes sense.  I guess those loads are wasted on my 3" GP.  Prolly put them in storage until I get a longer barrel gun. Thanks!

iirc the original 357mag load was a 158gr lrn at 1500fps out of a 8 3/4" barrel which got downloaded to it's present 1200fps or so when the lighter frame 357mag revolvers began appearing on the market.
