If you buy a gun from another person, in Indiana, do you have to then go register it under your own name?  How and where is this done?

there is no gun registration in Indiana.

If you want to do a transfer, go to a gun shop and pay them to do the 4473 on  the transfer.
It is not necessary to do this in Indiana though a receipt with information of the buyer and s/n etc is satisfactory for your own records if you want.

So what happens if a police officer runs the serial on it and it goes back to the original owner who isn't me? Can I get in trouble for that?

Guns are private property in IN,

If you buy from another person, you don't have to let anyone know, you don't have to notify the state.

You won't get in trouble for legally owning a handgun, simple as that.  You need a carry permit to carry

If you're worried about someone reporting it stolen after you buy it, get a receipt.

Simply put...NO.

You may lose possession of the gun, but you won't be in trouble for it.

There is no registration in IN.

A police officer can't "run the serial" on it and trace it back to anyone; that's ATF's job. All a local cop might be able to do is find out if it has been reported stolen in that jurisdiction.

First, if the gun is not stolen and he "runs" it through NCIC nothing will come back at all. Second, there is no ownership database to run it from so it won't "go back" to the guy you bought it from. When the original purcahser buys the gun from a shop that does not register it in his name, it only shows that he was the first purchaser. If he decides he wants to sell it down the road he can legally do so without any paperwork (as long as you are both IN residents and he has no reason to believe you're prohibited).
