Mark is building my new AR15 soon. I plan - long term- to reload for it but for the near future I'll be using milsurp ammo. What does everyone use re powders, primers, bullets, reloading kit etc to make their fav. loads? I reload for my .45acp LBR on a Dillon 550B which does the job very well. How do people feel about reloading 5.56mm on a progresive machine? or does everyone reload on a single stage press? Interested to know and learn from you all. Ta.

Get a conversion kit for the 550B and never look back!

Components wise people vary, but for powder Varget, Reloder15, and AA2520 are popular. Bullets are usually Sierra for people wanting to hit what they are aiming for consistently(!)

A Dillon Progressive is fine for reloading .223 and lots of shooters use them successfully.  I however don't. This is what I do for my Highpower (Laupa Match Cases) and CSR (Winchester Cases) Loads.

I use a single stage RCBS Rockchucker Press for decapping with a Lee universal decapper.

Cases are then ultrasonically cleaned.

I resize .223 brass with a Dillon carbide sizing die (you still have to lube the cases and I use Dillon Spray Lube) on a Foster Co-axial press, this allow the die to free float.  After resizing I wash cases in hot soapy water then dry them in the airing cupboard.  Cases are then trimmed to length on a Giraud Power Trimmer, I do this after every firing.

Cases are then primed using a K&M hand priming tool, I am currently using CCI BR4 primers.  Usually do this while watching the TV.

I throw all CSR powder charges with a Harrel Premium Powder Measure, 24 grns of RL15.  Highpower short line loads for are thrown, 600 yards are trickled up to weight 23.5 grns of RL15.  I weigh the 600 yard charges on a RCBS 10-10 scale that has been tuned by Scott Parker in the USA.

Highpower bullets are all meplat trimmed on a Giraud Power Trimmer and then bullet pointed with a Widden Gunworks Bullet Pointing Die, CSR bullets are meplat trimmed after seating and not pointed.

All bullets are seated with a arbor press and Wilson Stainless Steel Micrometer Bullet Seater .  I use 77 SMKs for CSR and 77 SMKs for short line Highpower with 80 SMKs for 600 yards.

Bullet runout on 600 yard loads is typically in the region of  0.000” to 0.0015”, I don’t check every short line or CSR load but they would be typically in the region of 0.001 to 0.002” or less.

A bit long winded but it works for me, I don’t bother with primer pocket uniforming any more as for HP you don’t need to with Lapua cases.  Does it make better ammo than any other method?  Who knows, it works for me and the results prove it.

As you've already got a 550, you're home dry

I have two 650's one set up for small primers one for large....

The reason.

I cant be bothered with wasting time changing the primer feed.

OK so I save 10 minutes tops..... but WTF

why have one when you can have two

a bit like owning AR's
