This makes me rethink my situation.

KaBOOOM...

This is a first for my eyes.

PHOENIX –– The bomb squad was called in to help crews working to discover the cause of a Phoenix house fire that sent one man to the hospital Saturday.

Phoenix police spokesperson Trent Crump said Phoenix Police and Fire Investigators were still at the scene near 48th Street and Thomas Road Sunday after a fire broke out at the home just before 10 p.m Saturday.

According to Scott Walker, with the Phoenix Fire Department, crews responded to a call reporting explosions heard during a house fire.

Walker said when fire crews arrived they heard small explosions and went to work on the fire.

"Our units had to go defensive due to the nature of the explosions," said Walker.

The homeowner reportedly told crews he had been reloading ammunition in a "weapon reloading room" in the home when the fire broke out.

Crump said the bomb squad was called in to assist in the investigation, as the homeowner is a collector of different types of military items.

"They were things that concerned them, such as the sound of ammunition exploding and neighbors had reported there had been an explosion," said Chuck Mount with the Phoenix Bomb Squad.

"It was loud enough to shake everyone's windows around here," said neighbor Tom Sawyer.

In addition to weapons and ammunition, the homeowner also alerted investigators to empty grenade casings in the home. Crump said nothing illegal has been found and the bomb squad is simply ensuring a safe environment for Fire Investigators.

Walker said the male homeowner suffered serious burns on his arms, face and top of his head. He was treated at the scene and taken to the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center.

According to Walker the man's wife said her husband was in the "reloading room" at the time of the fire, but he was not reloading ammunition. The husband and wife were the only people in the home at the time of the fire.

Walker said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Hell, the "explosion" was probably the BBQ propane tank. Powder, in plastic or cardboard containers and ammo doesn't "explode". It goes" Pfffffttttttt! The primers may make a little poppy-pop though....

Could stockpiled primers in ammo cans cause that?

I really don't think so.

Primers are pretty safe, about the only time they're dangerous is when stacked in a tube and mishandled.  Even then, they rarely start fires as much as they hurt whoever is near.  Powder is very safe when kept in it's original container and it doesn't explode.

My family has reloaded since before I was born, 52+ years ago with no more mishap than a single primer being ignited and scaring the dog and the women.  No fires, no guns blown up and no explosions.  And that includes bullet molding.

10 will get you 20 that he was doing something stupid, something he probably knew better than doing.

Powder burns, it doesn't explode.

Black Powder on the other hand, can explode.  I'm with 3rdpig, he was doing something stupid and probably knew better but did it anyway.

I don't know guys.  Might be he just had a house fire and also kept black powder.  kaboom it is.  Maybe he didn't do anything wrong.

Hope everyone is OK.

Exactly.  Don't count on the news reports to EVER get the actual facts.

The closest I came to a kaboom was when a stack of primers 'sploded in my Dillon primer feed tube... did no damage to me or the garage, but the wife thought I was dead and started to list my stuff on Craig's list!  She's damn quick.

he had to have had something else. I'm also with 3rd in thinking it was black powder stored inside of an ammo can or something similar that could build up pressure during a house fire.

This.... details are remarkably absent in that story.  I've been reloading for quite awhile and can't imagine being able to start a fire, let alone burn the house to the ground while doing it.  However, it's possible he didn't do anything stupid if he wasn't reloading at the time and the news is just reporting it since he had reloading gear and powder, etc.

Having said that, I used to know a guy who would smoke while reloading

Needless to say, I was never at his house when he was reloading.  As far as I know he's still alive.
