Since my new AR15 will shortly be in my hands I am wanting to know a few things about reloading for it.

Everything on the net says that ammunition for AR15s should be full length sized, and ideally with a crimp installed. Is this the case for UK spec Straight Pull rifles? Or is this recommended due to most websites being yank focused with their semi ARs?

Does anyone here necksize their fired brass? Is it required that a crimp be installed (with something like the Lee Factory Crimp die)?

I imagine I'll be loading something like 69gr Scenar, 75gr AMax and 55gr Blitzkings, porbbaly with Varget behind the and Remington cases.

Cheers :)

This.

Also, you seem to have quite a spread on bullet weights there.

What do you intend to use the rifle for and over what sort of distances?

Also, do you know the twist rate on your barrel?

Thanks guys.

It's a 1:8 twist 16" barrel. The 55gr Blitzkings were for fox and I was considering the 69 scenar or 75 amax for target use, a bit of paper but mainly Fig11s. What would you guys recommend bullet wise?

For fig11's I wouldn't even bother with reloading - I'd just use RG or RUAG...

This, and as well as this I wouldn't really bother with the 75 Amax's either

For targets try 69gr gr Sierra Match Kings and 25gr Varget. Match Kings are probably cheaper and more readily available than Scenars, and are very accurate. Full length sizing is essential, although you don't need to crimp.

From the Tim Hannam price list it looks like it would cost about 46p to reload a 69gr MatchKing using Varget (assuming the case cost is spread over 5 loadings, and not including any time to make them) - doesn't seem worth it when the 5 ring on an fig11 is pretty big...

Thanks for the advice guys!

I'll probably use RG for the most part with Fig11s then and develop a nice 55gr load for the Blitzkings :).

I have a .308 T3 Tactical thats I use for propper target stuff, but I might look into some of the competitions you guys do, CSR etc. (Never done any competitions, just plinking/target for my own satisfaction). Are the disceplines easy to pick up? Or is it a case that you need to be a very good shot and have the best equipment or its not worth turning up?

Mark - the rifle is coming from Wayne @ NWCP :)

Cheers

It's no good asking this lot as they are mostly Jedi Masters but yes even us lesser mortals can play. The disciplines are easy enough to pick up and they are often repeated in comps. Many details are dynamic, eg one standing, one kneeling on timed exposures, that sort of thing. Also, be prepared for the occasional run down, which of course will never be less than 100 yards/metres. Also you have to enjoy lying in large puddles in winter weather.

Ability and kit are always a matter of some debate. Clearly it helps if you are a very good shot from a variety of positions or if you expect to appear in the top of the list. Having the best kit only counts when you are in the upper echelons, ie a good shot with average kit will better a lesser one who has all the gucci kit. This bit depends on you. If you want to walk among the gods you will need loads of practice and good kit. If you do it for fun, just come along and shoot..........

I agree, but when factory ammo is is either unavailable locally or an absurd price is charged the only option is to reload. I have previously bought batches of ammunition and had it couriered up here but that is now very difficult and expensive for the relatively small quantity I am allowed to possess. I just do one standard target load and use it for everything. I don't get through thousands of rounds a year so it is not that bad, at least I know what I have got.
