After 39 years I've finally had enough of all the damn rain in the Portland/Vancouver area and am working on plans to move in the next 2-3 years.

Initial plans were Arizona or Northern Nevada, but after considering things the Bend area might just be where we settle.

I'm self employed and my wife will be a licensed teacher soon so hopefully she can get a job.

Am I wrong in thinking this would be a really good place to relocate with 2 elementary age kids and possibly one high schooler?

So what do you think?  Good idea or look elsewhere?

Best place in Oregon.  No jobs though; must bring your own work to the area.

Extremely cheap cost of living.

Definitely will not move there or anywhere if I am looking for work.

I'm a little jealous.  I love central Oregon, but my job and family keep me over here in the valley...

We currently live in the Bend-Redmond area and the population between the two is well over 100,000 now. The economy is not well and even more dismal than the Valley on the west side.  Our two wonderful Democrat Senators(Merkley and Wyden) often forget about the other 2/3rds of the state thats on the east side of the Cascades when they bring home the pork for the Marxist side of the state .   I like it over here much better than my time in the Hillsburrito-Beaverton area 10 years ago.  Naturally we arent satisfied with Bend as it has become Californized with nasty enviro-yuppies that dont work, but just play, shop, smoke dope and ski with all their riches from their home state they left before destroying Calis economy.   Bend is a good spot in the state for activities, but if you like peace and quiet its not the spot.  Of course coming from the Portland area maybe its enough peace and quiet for ya. For the most part Central Oregon is better than living in the rain belt on the west side, but that doesnt mean you need to settle as the people here arent as friendly as folks on the west, I think.  Just alot of arrogant snobbish Commifornians that have distain for lower class Oregonians.  We're pulling up by summer and heading  to Eastern Oregon where the antelope out number people. If we have to live in squalor so be it as its far better than living around "progressives" and their looney ideals.

My work unfortunately brought me back to the mossy side. Our place where we lived and where we head over to (not often enough) is out west of Terrebonne, north of Redmond. I think the people are lots friendlier Redmond & north - but the economy is still the same as in the Bend area.

Redmond might work too.

Going to head back over that way a few time this year to start narrowing things down.

Having moved from Bend to Seattle last year.. Bend *defines* peace and quiet.

There are personal reasons why I'll never move back to Central OR, but it's beautiful and I enjoyed my time there. If jobs aren't a concern, I'd be hard-pressed not to recommend it.

In the state of Oregon right now having a teaching certificate is by no means a guarantee of a job at a school.  Starbucks, yes.  School, no.

In the last two decades I've watched Bend go from not a bad town to a loony bin full of snooty assholes.

YMMV.

Pretty much the same as here, no guarantee my wife will work in the schools anytime soon.

Luckily we have our own business that is portable that we plan on continuing to build.

Trust me their are loonies all around me now
