I am going to be relocating to Eglin AFB for around a year.  Can anyone tell me a good gunshop in the Destin/Ft. Walton area to work with?  Are there any interesting things to do in that area other than the beaches?

Welcome to Okaloosa county wingnut!

You're gonna love it here...the most beautiful beaches in the world and just a great place to live. Period. Lowest crime rate in Florida..most conservative part of Florida. 5 to 1 Republicans.

So, I guess you're going to the 33rd TFW?

There are a couple of good gunshops here..jay's in Crestview and CharterOak arms in Niceville.

Got a couple of ARFcommers that live here in OK county..get up with us sometime, we'll go shootin'.

Nope, going to the NAVSCOLEOD.  I have been to Eglin once before for about a month and loved the hell out of it.   You on base at all?  Is there a place down there that can store firearms?  I have a few that I wanna bring, but I can't store them on base for fear of them getting fingered by the Security forces.  I would only have weekends open to go shooting but it sounds like a blast would love to meet up with you guys.

Theres also "Jimmy's" in fort walton.  They seem to have a good selection and o.k. prices.  Charter Oak is small, but he has quality stuff at great prices (IMHO).  If you are up for a short drive, there's "Gun Fun" and "Morgan's" in Panama City (my home ).  Gun Fun has an indoor range and a huge selection.  Both shops are Class III stocking dealers.  Gun Fun also rents machine guns on their range.  Welcome to the Panhandle.

Jimmy's sucks...they have a 20%-30% mark-up on every gun and ammo in the store. I sent a friend of mine to Jimmy's to check on an AR...they wanted $1100 for a nib Bushy XM shorty. Unreal. They don't even go to the local gunshows..they just find enough suckers in town to buy their stuff. They are the only gunshop inFort Walton...so it's a monopoly for them.

Just my honest opinion.

A little off topic ... sorry Wingnut116ACW.

I work for one of the Big 3 DOD contractors - our customer is in Panama City.

I'm gonna be up there (from Melbourne/Cocoa) testing for the Navy for several months this year, sounds like we need a Florida Pan Handle get together!

Wingnut, I'm glad we'll have another ARFCOMer around.  Let us know when you get here.

BTW.  Avoid Jimmy's like the plague.  I've never gotten anything but poor service and bad attitudes from them.  Jay's is a much better option and it's close to the ranges.

Looking forward to shooting with you.

Would be more than happy to get together with you guys down there.  I am going to be PCS'ing down there soon.  The only problem is due to the high ops tempo I will only have weekends off, most of my days will be monopolized with a lot of studying.  I will take regular trips to Panama City on long weekends,  haven't been to the Redneck Riveria in a few years.  I will probably be boating regularly in that area when I can afford it, so lemme know if you guys are up for anything.   I should be down there by the latest mid Feb. and be staying for around 9 months.

Boating? As in jetskiing?? That would be my specialty.

Just get up with us...

never been jetskiing, always wanted to try.  Actually renting a boat on base at the base marina.  It is within jogging distance from my dorm down there and a ski boat can  be rented quite reasonably from there.
