| Well I got Internet on Slicktop Mtn. today. What a drag! Century-Tel. I could have got satellite broadband for $300 up front and $76 a month. I settled for 2 phone lines and dial-up for $39 a month. Do any of you live out in the woods? and if so,what's your Internet plan? I'm sure I'll go through DTs. I have a business to run too. |

I've heard people call aircards that. It's a cell modem. If you're using the internet for work, it won't work. They have 5gb limits every month. They are fast though, even on lower tier networks, I it's faster than my satellite. When I'm on a good 3g network, it's faster than akubli with a 9 year old. Quoted:
One of my guys mentioned a 'skycard'? I dont know what one is yet but from his description its highspeed all the time anywhere. |

i don't know the quality differences between wild blue and hughes net but, hughes net is running a special right now 199 for the equipment 199 for the installation lowest plan for 59.99 a month (1mb download speed) right now 2 seperate mail in rebates 1 for 100 dollars and 1 for 50 dollars the speical part is the extra 50 back also they now have a lease option 99 dollars up front, free install, service starts at 59.99 a month and then you lease the equipment for 9.99 a month |

WildBlue has MUCH better service and speed, IMO. My folks had DTV/Hughes for years. It was alot more weather sensitve and we had alot of problems with the modem. And when they upgraded modems (damn near mandatory) they wanted you to pay something like 250 or 350 for the new one. And there was a possiblity that a DTV tech would have to come out and hook it up (for an extra fee) if the sat was a certain model or some such BS. My big problem with Wildblue is actuall when I tried to cancel my service. No major issues during the service. 1: Charged me a big fee, even though I had went well over the date for that sort of thing. By 2 years or so. 2: They didn't stop charging me the monthly fee (automatic draft) untill I told the bank to stop pushing it through and contacted the Colorado BBB. 3: 3 months after number 2 happened, they sent me a bill for the 3 months and another cancellation fee. A few hours of bitching and another report with the BBB got all that cleared up. |
| I tether my cell to my laptop... Speeds depend on where you are.... Some places in town I get faster speeds than I did with DSL. If I'm at my place out in the country, I can usually get speeds fast enough to stream video. It serves my purposes and it's only 25.00/month. |

Quoted: I have Wildblue through Dishnetwork. I have a consistent 100mbps, unless it is raining It sucks, but it is better than dialup by a longshot. You have 100mbps on your ethernet connection between your PC and your modem, but your actual internet link through the satellite is MUCH MUCH slower. |

But my cell service is not that hot.(AT&T) On a related note, I've been looking at a couple of mobile routers like the cops use. AutoZone sells one for $350 and pkgs range from $29-59.00. But I may still have celluar issues. |

I had my TopGlobal MB6800 on the EE for awhile, but I don't think folks knew what it was. ![]() http://www.topglobalusa.com/mb6800.htm If you're interested, I'll let you have it for a steal. The only reason I didn't get to use if for more than a few hours was it didn't fully support my Huawei EC360 Alltel card. I could connect but not tweak or modify my connection settings. They probably have released newer firmware by now. Their tech support/programmers said they would build me a driver and have it to me in a few days but I wasn't patient enough and got another router that worked with my card. They have a card compatibility list on that linked page above. Regarding the cellular issues, I have signal problems here at my place but the data cards have an antenna jack and I put a magnet mount wilson antenna on top of the tin-roof shed next to my house and got an impressive boost. ![]() |

Amen on the Hughes net. Wildblue as well. Satellite has 1500+ms (1.5 seconds) latency on a bright shiny day. With cellular I'm only about 120ms. Those milliseconds don't sound important. They are. I would love to have DSL or cable. DSL is all around me, but I'm in a dead spot for it. |

Not to disrespect your router, but it only has one antenna and I would want as much reception as possible. I am investigating an AUTONET Mobile router that is 3g for $399 but the coverage in my area is still iffy according to the footprint I saw. EDITED to say I'm very interested in the Wilson Antenna, am looking it up now. |

I just had AT&T Uverse installed. Hard to believe it is available in my area of Benton, but not in some areas of Little Rock. Several of my friends have Hughes-net and despise it. I also have Uverse in my newly built home in Alexander. Fiber directly to the ONT at the western wall of my house, which is then coverted to CAT5 and directly connected to my RG and then runs into my CAT6 internal network which feeds my STB's and data network. I have lived all over the country and utilized half a dozen different cable providers, nothing has come close to the picture quality of Uverse FTTP! And Uverse offers 18MB down / 2MB up data speeds, which is pretty damn nice. I highly recommend it, if its available in your area. |

The reception antenna is on the cellular card that you insert into the router. The antenna on the router only rebroadcasts the signal over 802.11g wifi to your PC. Antenna diversity (multiple antennas) work by reflecting the signal around wildly in hopes of it reaching the destination and the nature of a mobile 3G router is that it just isn't used in complicated structures with concrete, brick, etc that requires diversity. The most effective access point I use (Engenius ECB-3610S 600mw) doesn't utilize antenna diversity and it can shoot a signal through three concrete floors. |
