We have recently acquired an infestation of bugs in our house that we can't seem to get rid of. There are German or Asian cockroaches(not the big flying bastards, I'm aware those aren't going anywhere) and a smaller black bug I haven't been able to identify yet. No matter how much cleaning we do, spraying we do, or traps we put out they won't seem to go away. Little fuckers are really starting to piss me off because they seem to have been able to get inside the fridge, microwave, and dishwasher. Any exterminators out there or other folks with experience that could help me out? My parents mentioned "roach biscuits" but said you had to find pure boric acid(?) that was pretty hard to locate. Any other ideas?

Boric acid for the win!

Its at the home depot in a white squeeze bottle. Kills them dead! just put behind stuff and in cabinets where they hide.

Is it pure boric acid? Safe enough to use with a 3 year old running around?

Boric acid is a pretty mild acid in it's powder form and creates a line or barrier that the roaches don't like and find very irritating.  So you use it to make barriers for them to not cross.  You might still be able to find it at smaller mom and pop type pharmacies.

For roach ID:  zee German roaches haff zee captains bars on zehr backs (thorax).  Asian variety don't.  American roaches are big.

There is a tube of stuff that I bought that you squeeze out in hidden places like the instructions say. It knocked out the problem I had once when the spray and trap looking things were only controlling them but not getting rid of them.

I use the glass jar with coffee grounds method and it keeps them outside and dying instead of getting into the house.

You take a glass jar and fill it with a little bit of coffee grounds, new or used, and maybe even a little sugar if you want. Then fill with three quarters to half or a little more with water.

Prop it up on the house on the wall outside so it won't slip. Roaches will crawl along the wall and into the jar going after smelling the stuff it wants, coffee grounds are strong smelling. Once in, the bugs can't crawl back out because of the glass, so make sure the water is low enough. They will drown or be stuck. When it gets full, flush in the toilet or pour down the drain or something, then start all over. I put like two under the walls for every window and door opening and vent.

They collect all types of six (or more) legged critters, and is relatively free to do for most people. It's just an easy home fix for simple problems. If that doesn't help just go professional.

Quit spraying. all that is doing is moving them around. Get the stuff in the tube or call a exterminator that uses it. You will know if its the right stuff if its about 70.00 for approx 6 oz. Do not use boric acid.

I had that problem when i moved to a new house. tried spraying and boric acid. exterminator came and put the stuff in from the tube. 2 weeks later i cleaned all the dead ones up and havnt seen another one since.

My exterminator told me to focus on spraying the outside, you want to create a barrier that they don't want to cross.  Then focus on the inside.  He did tell me to try boric acid and baits with termidor in them if I remember correctly.   The big ass ones were pissing me off.  Not many, but when they are big enough to re-arrange your furniture, it doesn't take a lot to bother you me.  Their damn droppings look like mouse turds.  After I sprayed the outside, I put baits all over inside.  My exterminator said not to rely on baits alone because if you don't put a barrier outside (spray), they will still come in.

8 ounces powdered boric acid
1/2 cup flour
1/8 cup sugar
1/2 small onion, chopped (optional)
1/4 cup cooking oil or bacon drippings
(or more to form a soft dough).

Cream shortening and sugar, mix boric acid, flour and onion. Add to sugar, and oil. Blend well, then add more oil as needed to form a soft dough. Shape into small balls the size of marbles. (If balls are placed in opened, plastic sandwich bags, the dough will stay softer longer.) Place balls throughout the house in places normally inhabited by roaches (any dark, damp corner). Caution: Make sure no children or pet can come in contact with these balls, as it is toxic and keep out of direct contact with any food. When dough becomes brick hard, replace with a fresh batch.

I find that if you stick in areas roaches come in that it works best. Put it in every opening under sinks and counters, every where something comes from outside, inside. Dont forget the garage and under doors.

If all else fails shoot the survivors with a BB gun like I do. A flash light and a BB gun on the back porch = hours of entertainment.

Thanks everybody. got laid off a few weeks ago so the professional route is out of the question right now. I'll try some of the others.

When we lived in the crappy apartment with the floors that formed a v in the center, before I moved in I went around the entire perimeter of the apartment with boric acid.  I also got the spray stuff with the nozzle and shot it so that it went between the cabinets and the walls and lined the inside of the cabinets with boric acid.  A major place they were hiding was in the back of the refrigerator.  I sprayed that with the spray, and put boric acid down all over the place under the refrigerator.   If you have someplace where they die and you are not going to be looking at them constantly, leave them there, the live ones will eat the dead ones and die as well.   After a few days I cleaned up the dead bodies.

Adam's dad felt like what I was doing was overkill, but I freaking hate roaches and all apartments seem to end up with them somehow.  I never saw anymore after that first week.

We had a german cockroach infestation when we moved into our house. We hired Cooks Pest Control and haven't seen a roach since. I reccomend them if your own efforts don't yield results.

ETA: sorry to see you're being laid off. I will be soon as well.
