I have a pretty much stock Mini 14.

I'm trying to figure out what to do with it as far as accessories.  What have you done with yours?

It does have a muzzle break on it.

I have learned after $500+  dollars  that there isnt a whole lot that can be done to make the mini very accurate. I have had the stock bedded, had the barrel threaded and a suppressor added, also tried the accu-strut and it still isnt a very accurate weapon. I would say spend the money on some eye candy and perhaps some Ruger mags. But to blow very much on extra's on a mini is a waste IMO. Just use it for what its for, plinking, killin rabbits and making noise.  Nice gun though!!

That's what I have heard.  It is fun to shoot.  It doesn't have but maybe 2oo rounds threw it.

Guess I will leave it as is.

I did just pick up a 10-22 and I here you can make them very good shooters.  I have not shot it yet, so not sure how it shoots out of the box.

Do you have an AR15?

Maybe sell that Mini14 on the EE and upgrade?

Just a thought.

Got a AR

Have a guy at work that is interested in the 14  What do you think it's worth with 5 20 rnd mags?

I do want to build another AR!

Well I would say $400-$450 would be about market price for a blued mini. Factory 20 rnd mags are worth $25-$30 used and $35-$50 new. Your milage may vary.

..... a mini is a fun gun to shoot but with my new AR being so much better and more fun to shoot, I doubt I will be feeding many .223 rounds into my mini.

How's your cheekweld with the "ACOG" up that high?  Just asking.

It seems to line up pretty good.  Have not had a chance to shoot yet, but feels good (and I can still use iron sights!)  I think it's to low for me without it.

Comfort is important, it can be tough to get a consistant shooting position if you're not getting a good cheek weld.

Generally you'll see people try to co-witness the optics and the irons.  I had to add a spacer to my Aimpoint to get it up high enough.  (ARMS 40L is folded down)

Pic - with MSPaint.

I see what your laying down.  I will have to shoot it both ways to see what is better.  Without the riser, it did seem to low, but I will give both a try as soon as it defrosts around here.

Oh want to say thanks for the input.  This is my first AR so I need all the help I can get

This is without the riser

Does that look more like it?  You may have a point, it does lock in better with it lower.

I have a feeling you're going to need to ditch the riser.

Just for fun here's my varmint AR.

and here's my mini 14...the mini pictures kind of suck but it's the best I have.  If you decide to keep the mini (which I would do if I were you) give Great West Gunsmithing a call.  You can't go wrong there.

The Mini 14 is a nice sporting type rifle. But for the money i would pick up another Lower and build another nice Ar. Looks like a M4 type set up. You might want to look into a longer 18in barrel SPR type rifle for longer ranges. BRD no cure

Fixin up a Mini is kinda like putting Z-rated tires on a delivery van. It can be done, but it's pretty much a waste of time and money, doesn't really improve anything, and looks silly.

In all my years, I've found no worldly use for a Mini.

I'd sell it and "invest" in another AR lower or two (as already recommended). Get you're AR reconfigured and set up right, you'll see how great of a platform they can be. The AR being so modular, you can set it up the way you like and if you change your mind someday, change it around and sell off parts no longer used. With custom gunsmithing, you have put the money in and will never (more than likely) get it out.

i spend to much much time cleaning my AR whereas i spend zero time cleaning my mini-14.... i would much rather have a mini-14 then a AR. i have a AR and find it very boring.

mini-14 FTW

I'm thinking I will prob. sell the Mini and build another AR.  The girl friend likes to shoot the AR!

Thanks everybody!

I think that price is a bit out of date.  They had $600 price tags on them at the show I was at last Saturday.

I would start at $600.

Desperate times desperate measures.  Some say it is price gouging (usually the ones who don't have but want) I say free market.

One other thing.

Mini 14's are pretty cool.  The mags are way too expensive but they have more character.

I say, if you can afford to keep the Mini - by all means.

In my opinion, with ammo prices through the freaken roof, I'd prefer the more accurate platform.

Oh - and you can hang a shit load of tacti-cool stuff off the AR platofrm.
(don't try this at home)

Had a mini, went down that road.  Sold it, now for some sadistic reason I want one or 2 again.  If you want to accurize it, I would first get a trigger job done.  That was the best money I spent on it.  After that you'd be best off rebarreling it with a slightly heavier barrel and having it cut to 16.25" and threaded.  I would also get the heavier recoil springs, lighten the op rod, get reduced gas port bushings (so you can find your brass and not fling it 45ft away).

When I had mine, I had the BC folding stock on it.  It was ok, but I had to file the crap out of the finger grooves to make it fit my hand.  Also all the after market mags are junk, or take a ton of fitting and tweaking to make them work reliably, and even then I wouldn't trust them.  I had the barrel cut to 16.5", threaded for a muzzle break and had the front sight off the Mason muzzle break installed on the barrel about .5" behind the break (looked pretty cool IMO). Had john at greatwestgunsmithing do all the work (he does one of the best mini trigger jobs out there).  Also had a bi pod lug installed just for the heck of it.  I put the Williams WGRS rear sight on it (was a stainless ranch rifle).  I also had the barrel cryogenically treated and that seemed to help the stringing and accuracy a bit.  There was probably some other stuff, but thats about it.  It was a reliable gun.  I do not remember it ever jamming, but it was no the most accurate thing out of the box.  I would love to take one and just frankengun it just for giggles, but my pockets aren't deep enough to accommodate  a venture like that right now.  Maybe some day.
