Sorry if I am late to the game as I am just getting involved in NFA stuff. I purchased my first suppressor and the dealer had a short barrel full auto m-16. All I can say is I was in awe holding it. Now I doubt I can ever afford that but the shorter barrel sure seemed handy.
Is there anybody in MI currently fighting to legalize SBR's? |
|
I have always thought this myself. I mean if we can have full auto and suppressors than why not SBR (well you can if its also full auto).
Why do SBR get special treatment anyway, is it that they're more concealable or what? With the FN PS90 and F2000 measuring just as short as these SBR what's the point anymore? |
| The SBR/SBS law needs legislative action. It needs to be amended or rewritten. The problem is our legislature won't do it or even if they would the Gov will just veto it. This legislature make up was a good chance to push this until the other anti-gun BS started. MI legislature won't do anything until they see what the Fed does on the assault weapons crap. |

A technical point, but if you were holding a full auto M-16, it is a machine gun, not an SBR. You can possess a machine gun without regard to BBL length, but not an SBR semi-auto. Federal law does not admit of two NFA classifications for the same firearm. He was referencing the physical aspect of the M16. He then states while he couldn't afford the M16, the short barrel on that specific M16 was handy. Then asks about SBR, this shows he has an understanding of the two different categories. Did you fail English comp? |

Michman, I know it can be discouraging when no-name internet tough guys attempt to shit on your point about legalities, but please continue to post here. Most here appreciate it, I'm sure. |

Even the LSAT is no picnic... though I did relatively well on that with very minor preparations.

Oh forgive me he passed the bar! Now it's all clear. Sir, you should get your money back because your education failed you. If you have this much trouble comprehending plain English on a message board, I'd really hate to see what happens in court.
As far as Internet tough guy, glad to see the white knight ride in and save the day! This isn't the first time I've seen folks here jump on a guy for not being specific with class III items. This guy does and someone still feels the need to state the obvious that was already stated. It gets old. Not every post has to lay out exact specifics for the anal retentive. |

I do understand the difference. Full auto 11.5" barrel = full auto. Semi auto 11.5" barrel = sbr.
I cannot afford a full auto but I could afford the $200 tax stamp for the sbr. I am real interested in helping to get sbr's approved. Again I cannot afford 10k plus so sbr is about my only hope. Thank you all for the help and info. |

Michman's passing of the bar and the way he handles himself in court is the main reason you can have a conversation about full auto in Michigan. It was his legal prowess, dedication, and long hours, combined with Bustoff's never take no for an answer attitude, that got the AG to change the long standing opinion and allow full auto back in Michigan. Ontop of that, on his own time, helped several of us with the ATF and trying to get C&R SBR/SBS converted firearms approved. His post are always welcome here. His post simply restated some facts. Sure wasnt worth you getting your undies in a bunch. For some reason Thumbtack I suspect Michman has done more for gun rights in this state than you will ever read about, let alone actively participate in. You know, I havent been around the MI Forum much lately, now I remember why. |

There is an effort by a few MI attorneys to work with the legislature to change the statute. If we can get a bill introduced, then it will get posted here. In the meantime, legal research is being undertaken with the goal of completing a solid legal brief on the unconstitutionality of Michigan's SBR/SBS statute, if litigation is needed. |
