Check out www.opticsplanet.com

Scopes are like a lot of things - you get what you pay for.  Also depends on what you are looking for.  Vortex and Alpen are supposed to be very good for that price range.

I use the Nikon 16 x 48.  Crystal clear at 1000 meters.  Great detail.  Comes with a full size tripod.

If you want to go cheap, I got one of these:

http://www.swfa.com/pc-8283-1225-burris-12-24x50-landmark-compact-spotter.aspx

Basically, it's half of a pair of binoculars. I got a new one off ebay for $45. I bought them basically to throw in my backpack and take deer hunting. They are decent for the price. I like them because they're lightweight and at 24x, I can rest it on the ledge of my deerstand window and handhold it (no tripod). I use them in combo with some 10X Leupold Binoculars when I need more range. (there's some similar ones out there marked Redhead and Remington that are complete crap, I bought one then gave it to my daughter to use as a toy)

If you're looking for bullet holes in targets, get something better. I looked at some Leupold spotters for $300 that were pretty good. My dad uses a $100 Bushnell which has good magnification, but sucky light transmission, comparable to their new "Banner" line of scopes.

I have a Target Sports 20-50x60mm, it is the "store brand" for CDNN Investments (www.cdnnsports.com).  It works fine, seems rugged enough and is clear and powerful enough for anything I've needed.  Sells for under $100.  It came with a little mini tripod but you should probably figure on buying a better tripod unless you will only be using it on a bench.  I've got mine on a Vel-Bon tripod that cost about as much as the scope.

Sure its no Leupold, Zeiss, or Swarovski, but I don't have that kind of $$$.

I had one of these scopes I bought at a gun show.  Total piece of shit.  I got the Burris spotter from a friend and then I left the Winchester at the gun range for some other poor slob to have.
