Thanks, guys, it was a shock, he'd been 'out there' several times and just loved his job, always wanting to go back to help. He had such a large energy that he put into everything, work and play, that we always thought he had a charmed life and he'd be OK. Still nothing on the news, I wouldn't say too much until the family give the MoD the OK for the official announcement. That will probably happen later today or tomorrow |

Condolences to the families and anyone who knows these two guys Alan He was with the Paras, originally he was badged engineers (not REME). Not much info has been released just yet for reasons that might become obvious later. Any death is a tradegy and even more sowhen it's someone you know personally. That's the second friend not coming back. |

BBC just announced the death of a second serviceman, from the Parachute Reg, from gunshot injuries. I assume this was him Matt No names yet Yeah, that's him, and he leaves a young family, very sad. Specifics are being withheld from general release, maybe when they've looked into it more there maybe will be more info let out. |
Soldier killed in Afghanistan named as Cpl Lloyd NewellOne of the two British soldiers killed in Afghanistan on Thursday has been named by the Ministry of Defence. Corporal Lloyd Newell, a member of the Parachute Regiment, was killed by small arms fire while on operations in Helmand Province. "[He] was a natural and talented soldier who loved his work and the military lifestyle," the MoD said. The other soldier killed on Thursday served with Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. 'Man of integrity' Cpl Newell was married with a nine-week-old daughter. The MoD said it would not be releasing details of his age or where he was from "because of the nature of his work". An MoD spokesman said the paratrooper "was a man of integrity and principle". "He was a natural and talented soldier who loved his work and the military lifestyle. "He personified the great British Paratrooper - selfless, humble, cheerful and utterly reliable. He did his duty, relishing discomfort as a personal test, and always acting in the greater interests of the team." The serviceman from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, serving with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, was killed by a bomb in the Gereshk Valley area of Helmand. He died trying to rescue a vehicle which had been hit by another blast. The two deaths bring the total number of UK troops who have died since operations in Afghanistan began in 2001 to 373. I've removed al references in the thread to the unit he was with as that info is being witheld by the MoD |

relishing discomfort as a personal test, That last bit says it all, he'd rather go out and catch his food (with his teeth if he could) than have it prepared. Last time we were together we spent all day out in the rain without a sight of anything moving that was even vaguely edible (even the rabbits had more sense than us). He just laughted it off. He lived for the army, going on every tough course he could if he wasn't "out there, doing it". Lloydy, you'll be much missed by friends and family. |
