I was told today by  LEO that Hand Held scanners are "No Go" in the Peoples Republic, & that if they catch you with one it's grounds to be detained or held.
Can't remember the exact term he used but it sounded like more gray area legal jargon, & if it was true wouldn't Radio Shack be in a world of hurt right now?

I doubt it... I see people walking the street with them all the time.

what about if you have the app on your iphone? I'd think it's just illegal to have them during the commission of a crime.....my great grandmother (RIP) used to listen to hers like it was a TV show

Point Taken.
I had been listen to the FIRE/EMG end of my base unit today & in passing mentioned how busy he & the department must be with this weather.

That's when I got  "Scanners Are...blah! blah! blah!"

at this point I wanted to take my coffee & go.

Perfectly legal unless in the commission of a crime.

Be interesting to know how they tack that charge on.

Quick general scanner noob question.
If you want to listen in to LEO/EMT/FIRE, doesn't it have to be a digital scanner now?
I was going to get my father one so he could listen in when the emergency siren/ whistle blows.
I heard that they are all digital signals now.  Looked on line at digital scanners, they are like $500.
Is there anything cheaper?

I'm in Monmouth county and no departments here that I know of have gone digital. Just about all police are still operating on UHF and Fire/EMS on VHF. State police and NJ transit police both use analog trunked systems.

before buying ANYTHING, determine what frequencies/modes are in use by searching here:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?stid=34

for example, here is Monmouth County:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?ctid=1783

Mode could be
FM = normal, analog transmissions which can be listened to on a generic scanner.
FMN = above, but using the new narrowband reduced-bandwidth channel spacing.
P25 = APCO 25 digital mode voice http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_25
TELM = telemetry, digital data from car transponders, in-car terminals, and such.
and others.

fwiw you can listen to NJSP on the 5-0 radio app on the iphone. It's mildly interesting background noise for a little bit

Well at least I can still get the weather & FIRE/EMG, $500 is pretty steep for a digital scanner.
It's sounds like more entitlement crap to me.
