I need some more advice please

I'm looking at tactical scopes for target shooting, range probably not further than 1000yds.

I am not a big fan of massive scopes (excepting maybe for astronomical purposes ) so I'm thinking something around 4-16 might be sufficient?

Undecided on reticle choice.

I don't really want to spend much more than £2k on the scope..

Will also need a good quality mount.

I would consider used if in perfect condition (may post in the EE once I have a better idea of what to get)

As always, any advice appreciated

What discipline do you want to shoot?  How big is your budget?

Best thing to does go along to some of the long range shoots and see what kit people are using.

I personally use Nighforce.  depending on the discipline I use 5.5-22 x 56 or 8-32 / 12-42 x 56.  Good scopes but now quite expensive.

Schmidt and Bender are also good scopes, but they to are even more expensive.

Sightron do some very good scopes and they are less money but still excellent quality, but don't have the Gear Whore appeal of the Schmidt and Benders and Nightforces.

Plenty to choose from in the mid price range scopes.

Cheers for the reply.
I intend to try a variety of disciplines, mainly whatever Diggle has to offer I suppose, although bench rest isn't really that appealing at the moment. Is this important considering I've specified the range it will used out to?

As in the original post, budget for the scope around £2k although it is flexible.

S&B or NF, with IOR in the running.
Saying that, get behind as many scopes as you can - there is more to a quality scope than just good glass.

IIRC, Baldie has a hard on for Bushnell scopes and rates them.

£2k will buy you a lot of scope.

Better to buy a higher magnification scope and turn it down than a lower magnification scope and run out of zoom when you need it.

If you intend to do the PR shoots then a lower end magnification is fine as we shoot as close as 25yds.  But for longer stuff we do up there such as Tactical Rifle, F-Class, Benchrest and Long Range PR then you will probably benefit from having a wider range of magnification that you can adjust to suit the conditions you are shooting under.

This won't be for PR, I'm getting something much smaller for that

You make a good point RE: buying higher mag being able to wind it down. I just don't like massive scopes!

So would you consider 16x to be lacking for 1000 yds? I honestly don't know, having never shot past 600

Interesting. Bushnell look very affordable, too affordable

Another vote for Bushnell
6500 4.5-30x50 mildot see's me nicely from 100 to 1000 so my deer gun doubles as an offhand long range shooter. You'll probably need a 20MOA rail too.
Great scopes for the money

Depends on the size of the target.

Another vote for Bushnell. Recently purchased a 6 - 24 tac elite and it is spot on. Shot out to 600 yds so far but not planning on further. It really is very good for £510 !

I recommend the Leupold Mark 4s. Stupid flash website won't load on idevice but I seem to remember they do some reasonably compact models. I like the TMR reticles.

16 power is not enough for 1000 yards to be able to see with any great accuracy.

The best scopes about for the money at the moment are the nightforce benchrest models, ie the NF ones. They are front parallax, have less lenses than the nxs and are therefore, brighter and clearer. I,ve just bough an 8-32 power for a BR gun. This would fit the bill nicely.
