With deer rifle season around the corner, old man Dan and I have been talking scopes.

He is warming me up to the idea of a BDC scope which I'm ok with, that was the type of scope i used on Active Duty. But interweb research tells me that the duplex reticle will suffice for most hunting shots.

What does the average HTF hunter use for a scope, BDC or duplex?

For most everything around here a standard reticle is plenty. I usually help people find a zero where the bullet is only 2" or 3" high at any point during it's flight and this usually gets them out to 250-300 yards with a dead on hold depending on caliber. That's usually far more distance than any shots around here. YMMV.

I really like a bullet drop or a mil dot, but they aren't really necessary.

Unless shooting at distances over 300 yards, a 200 yard zero is usually good in any 30 cal rifle shooting a 150+ grain bullet at 2600+ fps muzzle velocity for hunting.
A thick duplex reticule is fine for that purpose.
If you need an easy BDC reticule, look at the Nikons. They are great scopes for the money and work well to 500 yards.

I grew up shooting the standard classic duplex reticle, which is fine but the BDC reticle, especially Nikon since you can download the Spot-On app on your phone, are the shiznit.  You just plug in the scope you're using, the cartridge you're using and any other relevant info you choose and it provides you with your exact aiming points at all the yardages set on the BDC.

I put a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10X42 BDC on my Savage 116 FCSS Weather Warrior .30-06 last year.  I haven't had any opportunity to shoot it at distance though so I can't say too much about it other than I'm very happy with the quality of the optic.  I also put a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9X40 BDC on my S&W M&P15-22.  Very sweet scope, I'll be putting them on all my future .22's.

P.S. Dan's the man, he recommended the Monarch and I'm glad he did .  Listen to him!

I have 3 Nikon and 1 Bushnell on 4 of my AR's. The Bushnell is straight up average hunter in 3-9x40. 1 of the Nikons is the pro-staff 2-7x40 without BDC and the other 2 are the 3-9x40 223 and a 3x32 i think it is 223 models, both having the BDC set for .223. Anyways, with my crap eyes i cannot barely see the BDC dots anyways, so i doubt i will ever benefit from them. But for hunting though, regular duplex scope is fine. I always used a 200 yard zero on my hunting rifles and will probably continue to do so.

These days as age sets in more and more...deer and antelope are safe from me at 250 yards+...i cant even see them to be able to engage them.

Im kinda thinking I may swing duplex and leave the RF and BDC to my future RCO when I get it. Dan has me aimed at Nikon so Ill most likely go with them.

I've honestly never had real field use for a BDC scope. Duplex works fine for me.

If your gun is not big enough and you are a short stroker, go with a standard duplex.
But if you have the equipment to run with the big dogs and long strokers, get a mil dot or BDC.

He needs more information aboit where to mount it. If his pick up doesn't have a moon roof/gun turret, he'll probably try mounting it on his steering wheel.

Dan is the deer whisperer....he just pulls up at legal sun up, whispers into the wind and the deer volunteers jump in the truck.

Need a massive cow catcher bumper upgrade for that sight I use both but my coyote rifle wears a BDC and I'm learning to love it. Nikon is a good to go brand. I can't count on one hand the number of deer I've killed past 200 yds. The hard part for me on convince people to check their bdc scopes at range when there is no ranges available past 100yds. I guess I'm trying to say is I have a hard time trusting a turret or reticle without shooting it at the distance it is calibrated for.
