Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't handguns have to be shipped FFL to FFL? I know long guns can be shipped to an FFL from a non FFL or to C&R license holders.

Handguns can be shipped by non-FFL holders to FFLs in another state as long as the receiving FFL accepts them. Also you CANNOT ship a hangun via USPS unless you are an FFL..

I ship mine UPS. They will hit you for overnight shipping. Last I did it was 50 bucks. Thats still better than shipping it from a FFL dealer.

Get their FFL paper, make a copy for yourself. Make sure the original is signed in INK. put it in a box at UPS. Tell them it is going for repair or they wont let you send it.

address it to the FFL and your done.

The laws have changed and you can accept a fax or scanned copy of the FFL letter now.  I use Fed Ex and they haven't given me a hassle yet.  I use USPS for rifles, they are cheaper than UPS/FedEx.  Fed Ex doesn't require you to lie about where the pistol is going, just show them the FFL letter and they are good to go.

Then everything has changed.

FEDEX wouldnt even talk to me about sending a handgun. They said NO and didnt want to discuss it any further.

As far as UPS, they didnt know anything either. The phone support told me no on ANY gun. Then when I got there they said it had to be going in for repair.

I send all my long guns through USPS. It's a lot cheaper.

You need to make sure you go to a HUB and not a "store".  The smaller stores (like those in strip malls, etc) will not accept handguns but the main HUB's have no issue.  They will require you to ship overnight but they should not give you a hassle.

There is a FedEx hub on Eureka (in bewtween Middlebelt and Inskster) in Taylor.  That is the closest to me and they have always been easy to deal with.

Now if I sell my Michigan pistol to someone else's FFL in another state do I have to let the State of Michigan know that I'm no longer the owner.

I never have, it will get transfered out of your name by the FFL you take it to.

But I'm sending it out of state to a FFL. Now if I sold it or traded it to a local FFL they have always given me a receipt or some sort of paper that shows that the handgun is no longer registerd to me in Mi. Just saying the guy in Tn  comes to Mi and  he committs a crime or gets pulled over by the cops and they find a handgun that was registered to me in Mi. Is there some way that this hnadgun gets transfer out of my name in the Mi pistol registration files?

MSP records, last pistol I sold I sent a copy of my inspection permit and an explanation letter to them.  I think its a law but cant find it now

If you sell a pistol out of state and ship it yourself it must go to a FFL and it must be sent overnight via UPS or Fed Ex NOT through their stores or outlets.

1)  Have the buyers dealer send you a signed copy of his FFL.  I also try and get the buyer to send me a copy of his DL for my records

2)  Send the pistol to that dealer with a letter stating you are shipping such and such pistol (serial # and desc) to him for his customer so and so.  And write in there that it is now his resposiblity to make sure the buyer is allowed to own the pistol in that state and if not the dealer should return it to you and you will reimburse him for the cost of shipping.

3)  Keep the shipping reciept, your green card, the letter and the lic of the dealer you sent it to all together.

I keep this for every pistol I have sold out of state and have never had an issue.
This is more than you have to do (the letter and copy of their DL is not needed but I rather have more than I need)

The only time you have to inform the MSP you sold a pistol is when selling it to someone in state.  You need to send  in a copy of the purchase form (that is if they have a CPL) I think they just give you one copy of their purchase permit for your records if they do not have a CPL and then the MSP is informed when they take it in to register it oops safety inspect it at their local PD.

How do you ship a handgun to yourself in another state if you're traveling?
1/4/2007 6:55:21 AM EDT
[#17]
You check it on the plane (call the airlines for the exact specs) but more or less it has to be in a locked case (ammo in another locked case) you must check in at the counter inside and you must declare it.

You cant ship a gun to yourself in another state.

Yes you can.  I haven't tried it yet, but it is permitted by law.  Whether or not any shipper will allow it is another matter, but it is legal.
