Well whilst you were all getting wet, between working I spent the weekend tinkering with my Holy Grail, ie optimum sighting system for my V22. I have now settled on a 1-4x24 illuminated target dot, with a Burris Fastfire mounted on top. I'm going to start with the scope zeroed at 50m and the Fastfire for 25m. Looking towards the Autumn Action weekend on 25th, perhaps a little bit of 1500 and speed steels.. |
Sorry, I was thinking out loud. It's not an ultimate scope, it's what I can afford. If I had no limitations I would have an S&B 1.1-4x20 Short Dot PMII with a Docter dot sight on top. Things as they are, I have an MTC 1-4x24 Mamba with a Burris Fastfire on top. That said, I am very pleased with my budget option, the MTC glass is very clear and the reticle (target dot) very sharp. The Fastfire has an actual on/off switch and still adjusts to low light, so I'm a happy bunny ..I'll post pics when I've stopped arguing with my computer........ |
| icarus, stuck a fastfire on top of my ar15 PR scoped rifle, far to high as secondary sight, now i've put it on my V22 upper in place of a scope, sighted in fairly easily down at cheylesmore range, the Eley extra subsonic rounds cycling nicely, even with both springs in, but not other subsonic rounds. ..phil. |
My setup is specifically for rimfire use inside 100yards, the dot really being for close up stuff, 20-25yards, the scope for the rest. I found that the Eley Club Extra work well in mine too. Winchesters T22's were good as well, but not consistent enough for competition. I'm trying to get hold of some LapuaClub as that's supposed to be pretty good, and 54 quid a 1000 against 76 quid for the Eley.. |
At least it's not a barn door.......... |
Steady! I've seen you lot shoot back in the day… ![]() |

Whats the reticle like on the Mamba, and how does the scope hold up, generally speaking ? I need a budget scope to get some .22 playtime after the car stole most of my squirreld away cash, and the mamba seems to fill the ticket, with 1-4X. Link to supplier would also be appreciated. |
The reticle is a floating target dot with fine cross hairs. It also has 11 levels of illumination. I haven't had it long and I don't tend to bounce my scopes off things so I'm not sure what level of abuse you're looking at. Build quaility is good and the optics are very clear throughout the magnification range with no distortion that I could detect. Eye relief is pretty forgiving too. I'm very pleased with it and would have no hesitation in putting it on a full bore. The mounts they come with are pretty crap but are useful for turning into mounts for other things like lasers, torches etc. They do come with hinged metal lens caps that you either love or hate. The company has a pretty good reputation for service. they are at www.mtcoptics.co.uk |

Just to put the cat among the pigeons, there is an alternative around that price point.... Link I've been doing a little light research into 'scopes from both companies and I get the impression they're both work a look. |

Had that in the loop, but would like to try a 1X, I`m running the IOR 1,5-8X on my bushmaster, but there is something not quite right when doing the IPSC thing... Could also have something to do with my eyesight he Guess I`ll get some hands on when the hunting seasons over and we get together for some distance shooting... |

I run a Meopta R1 1-4 x 22 illuminated and it is a fantastic scope, dot is 2 moa so at 300m on x4 is only 6 inches across - I would like a little more power but keep the 1x power, but the other alternaives seem to wash out the dot in bright sunshine. The Meopta is at not as expensive as a the top of the range glass like the S&B alternative but it retails at £700+ here but only sells for $500 in the US ! I have it with an Armailte 30mm mount - great mount for the scope and when re mounted it on my US AR it was within 6 inches off zero ! |
This one was my other option. I particularly liked the reticule on the Falcon. However, for my application the turrets are too tall. I wanted to keep the Fastfire mounted as low as possible, so the MTC was what I went for. I think they are both good, comparable scopes. |
I'm sure the Meopta is a great scope but I am talking sole use on a rimmie out to @100m. (although I think the MTC would do fine on a full-bore. I use an MTC Viper on my 7.62mm for F/TR and haven't had any problems) That's not worth another 500quid to me |
| Icarus, yeah sorry what I meant to say, before beer muddeled my head was that I now have it on my .22AR and it works great despite being a full bore scope. I cant afford a scope for each gun so as an all round scope that allows me to switch it between guns, it works well. |
How do you get on with the (relatively) limited adjustment range on the Viper? The quoted figure is 25moa (I presume that is 25 in each direction for a total of 50). I was thinking about either an MTC Viper or a Falcon Menace as a cheap stop-gap 'scope for my .308 and I'm leaning towards the Menace with it's quoted 80moa range. I want to shoot out to 1000yds and not have to worry about running out of adjustment. |
I'm using a Falcon Menace (10x fixed mag) on my 308 Sako TRG at the moment primarily due to lack of funds for better glass. I bought the model with the MP20 reticule ( mils) with matching mils adjustment. I've seen some pics of broken Falcon scopes on the net (the adjustable 4.5-18x) but I'm happy with mine so far, given its cost. |
Oh dear, that's the one I had in mind. Can you tell me more? |
The front bell housing is screwed onto the main tube...it broke off. Not sure if this issue is widespread or limited to a early batch of this particular scope. I'll hunt down the pics for you. Broken Falcon Here and here Cheers Steven |
I thought about going that route but I found one scope won't do everything and all the re-zeroing is a pain in the ass.. |
The Viper is 80moa, ie 40 each way. I help it out by using Burris Zee rings with eccentric inserts that gives it another 10moa of up dangle. I have read somewhere that the Vipers actually give nearer 100moa, and certainly I get 9 full rotations off my 200yd zero which gives me, in theory, 54moa of up dangle to play with. I would have chosen a 20moa base as a solution if I could have found one but my T4 is tall enough as it is............. |
|
The Meopta looks a nice scope, but again we're talking a lot more money. Won't MTC post you one out? |
Thanks for that, much appreciated. |
That sounds perfect. Just out of interest, have you got 1/4 or 1/8 moa adjustments on the turrets as I'm wondering if they've changed the spec. I ask because here it says they: "reserve the right to modify design (sic) for continuous product improvement without prior notice". Check out their quoted adjustment range too. |
1/8moa clicks on the Viper, 1/2moa clicks on the Mamba.. |
Thanks for that, I think I'll see if I can track one down to have a look at. A 6-24x56 that is. |
