As far as I'm concerned, it's the best kind of snake....dead.  Sorry, but legless reptiles are where I draw the line.  Only one of us leaves the room alive.

Anyway, dog was barking at something and upon inspection I find him intensely following a snake up on to the concrete patio heading behind the smoker and towards the dog house in the corner.  A quick retrieval of a three foot piece of 1 x 2 and the trusty 'ol Official Boy Scout hatchet (no kidding.  It's killed many of these beasts over the years).  One strike to the head with the "snake stick" and it was over.  Snake's dead, I'm still here...for now.  I think I know the answer, but what the hell is this?  I'm thinking the little triangle head and skinny tail are significant?  Didn't get a pic, but the belly was white all the way down to the tail.  Here it is....

Oh, and I'm also guessing that these little guys don't make a habit of traveling alone either, do they?

If I saw that in the wilds of my back yard, I'd call it a garden snake and let it be.  No clue what its official name might be, but I've always considered small, skinny, grey snakes to be "garden" snakes.

Diamond heads can be indicative of a poisonous snake, but it doesn't necessarily guarantee it.  That one there doesn't appear to be a coral snake, rattlesnake, or copperhead...  don't think it could be a baby cottonmouth, either.  From what I understand, they have patterns that darken as they age.

Looks like a little brown or crayfish snake. It was probably looking for food or water and it was non-venomous. The only venomous native snakes in Texas are the rattlesnake, copperhead, cottonmouth and coral snakes.

What color is the belly? It looks to be either a crawfish snake or a water snake. Both are harmless.

I used to pick up little snakes like that all the time when I was a boy playing in the woods.

Hey, even Indiana Jones had a problem with snakes.  Funny thing is, spiders don't really bother me.  My brother, on the other hand, will pick up a snake without hesitation, but bring him a spider and he'll freak out.  Who knows, it's gotta be something primitive deep within the psyche.

The only thing that bothers me anymore are those red wasps. Its more of an annoyance than anything, but I do enjoy killing them.

Snakes are cool, and spiders used to scare me as a kid, but I got over it. Mind over matter, pussies!

I usually leave those little fellas alone. The only snakes I don't care for are the venomous ones and I usually try to leave them alone as well.

I'm with you on the wasps.  They are right up there with snakes on my "kill on sight" list.  It's a very short list by the way.  Even shorter since the boys got Bin Laden!

That is a brown or ground snake. They don't even bite. They eat slugs, snails, worms, and small insects. They are absolutely harmless. Kids can even play with them without concern for injury. They rarely even crap while being held.

Spiders don't bother me one bit. I've had them crawl all over me and never batted an eye.

Snakes though.....

The fact that they can slither on the ground, swim, climb a tree and all sorts of other things without appendages just ain't right. Plus I've had some pretty close encounters with venomous snakes in my youth that really left me scared of them. Not to mention that I had a baby water moccasin in my toilet about a year and half ago......

I just now Googled a coachwhip image. Holy crap. That pic above is a coachwhip? I thought bull snakes were big. I chopped one up with a bat-wing mower one time that was about 8 feet long. That pic looks like about 15 feet. It's like a land Anaconda.

Found this bitch on my front porch a couple of years ago.  Rat snake.  I left him alone that night and he slithered up into our patio light fixture and departed the next day before I got home.  If I could have reached him, I'd have thrown him up in the attic to see if he could have found any rodents.  The old adage says if they can't fine any rats/mice in your attic, they'll haul ass.  Rat snakes are, however, one on the most aggressive non-venomous snakes...

I didn't know things crawling out of toilets attracted cute babes. Maybe make her a pair of boots out of it.

What if you went into the head in the dark and that thing latched on? I saw on Nat. Geo where some woman in some S. American village went to take a dump in an outhouse and a big python latched onto her ass. The only thing that saved her was her ass was so fat it couldn't rag her through the hole.
