| Any serious concerns about snakes during hunting season? Having hunted in Florida most of my life, snakes are a concern year round. But its much colder here, obviously. How many of you that hunt, wear snake boots? |

So where is the gnat line? Anything south of Macon is considered below the gnat line. I was clearing shooting lanes on the farm this afternoon and the gnats were thick. They are bothersome until the first hard frost. td Well that's good to know, we are northwest of Atlanta so gnats won't be an issue... lol Hunting in Florida you never really get away from gnats and mosquitoes or snakes, so I'm looking forward to pest free hunt! |

Killed a 5 foot Rattlesnake yesterday in Cataula, crossing the road. Less than 1 mile from where I hunt. why? I only kill the venomous snakes and let all others live. I have too many kids, grandkids, pets, and relatives that come to play on our 325 acres. Edit to correct terminology.

| You think we have it bad with having to worry about our snakes, there is a guy in GD who posted a snake they killed in camp the other night. It was a gaboon viper, he said they killed a black mamba a week earlier. Of course he's in Africa. I"ll take rattlers, copperheads, and cottonmouths any day. |
Help for the terminally ophidiophobic: Overcoming snake phobia.
I don't get why so many hunters are so skeered. I've had a few close calls - all my fault, and took a friend to the hospital once when he got bit on the hand by a big rattler (gross but he lived). Learn their habits and habitat same as the game you are hunting. Its all woodcraft. Just watch where you put your hands and feet. I have hunted this state since I was 11 and have never worn snake boots. I am more afraid of yellow jackets and Asian hornets. |

Actually had an experience with black mambas in South Africa. We had hunted late into the day, I shot a nice gemsbok and we were tracking it and found it right at dark. My PH asked me to go back and get the truck while he and the tracker got it out of some brush so I agreed, confident I knew where it was. Well as it turned out I didn't know exactly where the damn truck was but in my quest I followed a trail into what must have been where all black mambas come from. Those fuckers were suddenly all over the trail just ahead of me, some with their heads raised up checking me out but not aggressive, most of them were juveniles only 2-3 feet long. I backtracked pretty quick and never saw another one. The PH didn't believe me so he sent the tracker in to find this nest of snakes. He came out of the bush quicker than I did and was much more animated with his description of what he saw. |

I don't , but there are a lot of good people here in Cataula. We shoot a lot but lots of people around me shoot as well. Sounds like y'all had a blast at the shoot, I had to work Saturday but will definately make the next one. |
