And so it begins. If you live up along these bushy mountain areas make sure you've got your stuff together. Gather your important documents - bills, medical records, licenses/certificates, photos ... think about it now. I would also rather have my firearms in my truck rather than burned in a fire or stolen out of a safe following a fire. Figure three sets of clothes, a few hundred dollars (or the check book and ATM card), medicines, toys for the kids, iPod with headphones and/or a radio. I keep my stuff on a special thumb drive - scanned copies of birth certificates, credit cards, car titles, my DD-214, passport, my certifications, diplomas ... and I use an external NAS to store my photos on. Unplug that thing - or a USB drive - and go. |
The local Radio Shacks suck. Im going to have to hit up the HAM radio outlet in Kearny Mesa. Thanks though |
I'm pretty sure they all do now. ![]() The scanners are still very nice. They'll go on sale from time-to-time. I seem to recall paying $99 for mine, normally $149. The programming software is free on the web and there's people on the Internet that share setups as they can be pretty complex with all the trunk requirements. |
I'm aboard Camp Pen. I just left my unit in the 14 Area (mainside) as we had to move some "stuff". Fire was still burning here and there near mainside in the "Juliette" training area where it started. Not nearly as bad as it was. I believe it's moved out to the eastern edge of the base near Morrow hill as I heard on KOGO that there were new evactuations. It burned from the Juliette area down the canyon to the stables and rodeo grounds by the back gate. Burned across Vandegrift back towards the golf course where the fire burned last week. It was also right up near the General's housing behind the PX and the Serra Mesa housing area behind the PX was evacuated. I didn't hear that they evacuated the San Luis Rey housing. Not sure if they could even get out as the fire was pretty much all around there. As I was coming home along Vandegrift South of the airfield it didn't appear to be much fire up in the ridge line. Looks like the fire in that area burned itself back out to where everything was burned off last week. Winds have really died down. They haven't reported any buildings being damaged or any casualties. Base evacuees are at the community center in the Stuart Mesa housing area. Oceanside residents being evacuated are going to El Camino High School just off the 76 and Old Grove. I will try to post some pics in the A. M. that I took at around 1800 earlier this evening. Got some video of the helo dropping water right by the General's quarters. A lot of people on the radio etc. were speculating about it being caused by live fire but there's no live fire ranges in the Juliette training area. It was a holiday today so could possibly been some Marines from the barracks dicking around where they shouldn't have been on a quad or dirt bike. Maybe a careless smoker. I'm sure we'll hear more after they investigate. I need a shower, smell like I been hovering over the smoker all day. |
| i saw the smoke of the tujunga one coming back from the angeles forest sunday and coming back from class tonight i saw fire/red in the distant hills from studio city... ive never actually seen it glow red like that before, just smoke. (only been here 2 years) |

0699Tuefelhnd or Gun-Junky do you guys happen to hear or even seen if the two "Super Scooper" planes was used last night? During the day both were in full swing. Supposedly too that the pilots has night vision capability. By the way Camp Pendelton did a terrific job of making a fire break between the homes and their perimeter. |
I saw both Super Scoopers making runs on the fire as I was driving towards it. One right behind the other and LOW. I heard them say on the radio that they were landing near the Oceanside harbor to refill. This was before dark. After dark I didn't see any aircraft attacking it where I was at, but they very well could have been dropping elsewhere out of my view. Also several helicopters were attacking it and I saw a couple different spotter planes. I know they diverted some equipment to head out to the Campo area to fight that fire. Last weeks fire they brought in what looked like a P3 to drop on it. |
Ive seen a few helicopters and planes but Im a bit to far to see any drops. I will say that when I left my house this morning I didnt really see any smoke. Im also hearing the Juliette fire is now 50% contained. |

Fires burned out one of Time Warner Cable TV & Internet main fiber trunks, for users from the Riverside, Rialto, Colton, Murietta, etc areas. My TV & Internet just came back up after 24 hrs of being down. Edison had to replace some telephone poles and the TW guys to string up some new fiber. Technicians had to wait until the Fire Dept. to give them the all clear when it was safe to work. |

As a kid, my buddies and I used to go camping/hunting on the hillsides right above what is now Sesnon Blvd. It is a beautiful area. I have some friends that live just south of Sesnon and they say everything is okay in that development, only 1 structure in the area was burned so far. Great pictures, btw! Eric |

From the North County Times: OCEANSIDE ---- The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and two other agencies are investigating the cause of the 4,000-acre Juliett fire ignited Monday on Camp Pendleton, base officials said Thursday. The probe suggests that arson is suspected, but a Camp Pendleton spokeswoman said she had no information about why a criminal investigation was opened. Arson is punishable under state and federal law, as well as the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which applies to members of the armed services. The San Diego County Sheriff's Department and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection are also investigating the Juliett fire, officials said. Juliett, 90 percent contained as of early Thursday evening, sparked Monday afternoon, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes under evacuation orders. Officials said Thursday that Marine exercises were being conducted in the Juliett Training Area when the fire broke out, but that they were land navigation exercises and did not involve live ammunition or other explosives. Officials were unavailable to comment on whether vehicles or other equipment were being used at the time. No one was available to comment on whether the training troops saw anything that suggests the Juliett fire might have resulted from a criminal act. |
