I added my 2 cents...  I really don't think it'll do much good in this wonderful state.  I shoulda never left Florida.

I just shot off an email to the editor of the Joliet Herald regarding the New Lenox PD incident:

In response to: "Shooting so out of place" 12/15/06
To the Editor and Readers-

While sitting at the kitchen table with my wife this afternoon reading the Joliet Herald, I saw an article by Susan DeMar Lafferty about the recent shooting in New Lenox.  I couldn't help but think that she must be living in a dream world to be so surprised by this incident in quiet New Lenox.  I have an announcement for everyone - Get used to it!

This area is getting worse every day as the criminals move out to attack quiet suburbia.

You say "What if this armed man had been on school property during regular school hours?".   Well, that would be truly horrible, especially with bullets flying.

You say "What if he had not been stopped?" and "What if we didn't have a well-orchestrated police response?".  It would have gotten much worse, I'm sure.  Others would have been injured or killed, possibly including children.  Thank our dedicated Law Enforcement Officers for putting their lives on the line for you and your family every day.

Now I've got a "What if" for you.  What if after killing 2 police officers he turned his gun on a family walking by or your children playing on the playground?  What happens now?  Illinois residents are prohibited from carrying a firearm to defend themselves and their families.  Right now, the only other state that doesn't allow law abiding citizens to carry firearms for defense is Wisconsin (and that may change very soon).  That's right, 48 of 50 states in the USA have provisions to carry a firearm, either concealed or visible.  48 states cannot be wrong, can they?  However, Illinois politicians still believe that law abiding citizens do not have the right to defend themselves from an attacker, rapist, burglar, or murderer.

Do you know anyone who has been raped?  Have you been a victim of this horrific crime?  If you, with the proper training, had been armed with a firearm, would the outcome have been different?  I'm sure it probably would have, judging by the statistics of similar violent crimes in states that allow their citizens to protect themselves.

I enjoy reading about these various "Gun Turn-In" programs.  Do you really think that criminals will turn in their guns to get a $100 gift card or refurbished computer?  The only people benefiting from these programs are the criminals.  They know that whoever they decide to rape or attack will not be armed.  You cannot always count on the Police to be there ready to protect you.  For the most part, Police Departments are under staffed and cannot be everywhere all the time.  I understand that there are too many guns on the streets.  But, the answer is not to disarm the law abiding citizens of this state.

Wake up Illinois, it's time to fight back.  We need to let these criminals know that we won't take it anymore.  Support Concealed Carry in Illinois.

Good job Mr. Harper.

But you do realise your response made sense and will therefore be totally ignored.

BTW, check again. Wisconsin has open carry.  48 states have concealed carry, 1 has only open carry, and only Illinois has no concealed or open carry.

lmao, yeah, I'm sure it will be ignored...  But, If more letters like this were sent, it would get pretty tough to ignore it.  Maybe there's someone at the paper that has enough sense to research it and do a story on it.

Everyone on this board should write at least three pro gun editorials to local papers in the new year.  It can't hurt.

BTW-Great letter!

Sadly the Joliet Herald News lost one of the only Pro 2nd Amedment journalists it ever had when John Whiteside passed.  Since then Joe "chicago is a Eutopia" Hosey has done his best to makes gun look bad.

Good letter Redneck.  Very well written.  Hopefully it's not taken as a put down on the reporter but taken as it should be as an eye opener about our safety and protection.

Thanks for the comments everyone btw...

No, it wasn't meant to put down the reporter' just trying to open eyes.  I didn't know that about Mr. Whiteside, he was a good reporter.  And that's not the impression I got from Hosey.  I'll have to research some of his past stories, but from the conversations I've had with him regarding the smoking ban in Joliet I wouldn' have guessed it.  I was actually hoping to give him a call about this.
