Candidates make push on eve of special election Updated: March 10, 2008 05:08 PM Candidates make election-eve push 7th District campaign Check All | Clear All Democrat Andre Carson Democrat Andre Carson Republican Jon Elrod makes phone calls over the weekend. Republican Jon Elrod makes phone calls over the weekend. Libertarian candidate Sean Shepard Libertarian candidate Sean Shepard Jeremy Brilliant/Eyewitness News Indianapolis - The campaign to fill Julia Carson's seat in the U.S. Congress is down to its last day. Absentee voting at the City-County Building ended at noon Monday, and voters will head to the polls Tuesday to vote for Carson's replacement. The choice is among Democrat Andre Carson, Republican Jon Elrod and Libertarian Sean Shepard. In addition to their platforms, the candidates also face the challenge of reminding voters that the special election takes place Tuesday, an unusual time for voters in Indiana. If early voting is any indication, they may be in good shape. So far, just over 6,500 people have cast ballots in the 7th District, a figure similar compared to 10,600 in last year's municipal election, which included a large voter turnout on election day. "We've never had a special congressional federal election in Marion County, so we didn't know what to expect but what we are seeing is much heavier than a primary," said Marion County Clerk Beth White. Carson was busy Monday morning meeting residents of the 7th District outside a grocery store on East 16th Street in a final push to get his message to the public and reminding them to vote. "Vote tomorrow, March 11. Tuesday, March 11. Tuesday, March 11 and our message is resonating," Carson said. "I think they'll come out." Carson has received funding and campaign support from the National Democratic Party. "We need to make sure that we can extend the Democratic majority so that we can get some things done in Washington," said Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-New York). Elrod did some campaigning in the morning, but spent the afternoon at the Statehouse, insisting his legislative experience will give him the edge. "We're coming down to the wire. I think we've put our campaign together, I think we've put our message out there and I think we're going to come out on top and I can't wait to get there," Elrod said. He personally called voters over the weekend to convince them he's the best man for the job. "That gives them one last chance to ask a question of me, where I stand on an issue," Elrod said. "They get stuff in the mail, they hear things on the news, they want to know who I am. What better way than to call them up and tell them?" Shepard has run a much lower profile campaign, with less money to spend than his opponents, but he wants voters to know they have a choice. "The votes that I get are largely going to be people who have sat home out of disgust, people who are looking for a different option or people or people who just think we need to take a different approach to the way we're governing," Shepard said. Asked if he was really building momentum now for the primary in May and general election in November, Andre Carson said he wanted to finish breakfast before he starts thinking about lunch. The polls open Tuesday morning at 6 and will remain open until 6 p.m. for voters in the 7th District. Eyewitness News election coverage AddThis Social Bookmark Button |

Carson is in "hopes of inheriting" the position. I work up in the district, but do not live in Indy. I really dont know a whole lot about any of the candidates, hope for the best I guess. Its out of my control other than trying to "sway" the vote with a few co-workers that live up there. |

I love Carson's commercial about Bush supporting the "RISKY SCHEME" to privatize social security. Liberals can't even conceive of the fact* they are taking hundreds of thousands of dollars away from the people they are so intent on "helping." Maybe they should just finish the sentence and say they want to help people stay in poverty. *Polite way of saying they are too stupid to understand |
One of my co-workers was walking around today telling people to vote for the black man. The sad part is that he is a gun owner and is really on the right end of the spectrum in many issues. ![]() It's only temporary, but Andre worries me more than his grandmother. I was very sad when she died, not because I liked her, but because I was afraid of a socialist who will actually vote. |
Andre Carson won by like 54% to 43%. I believe that I read in the Star that the district has appox. 470,000 registered voters and only appox. 47,000+ voted. about 10%Its their right not to vote, but then I believe they lose their right to complain too. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080312/LOCAL/80312035 |

the mr and I did our part too. Our polling place was empty when we arrived and by their little chicken scratch tally marks, it had been empty pretty much all day. Andre' worries me more than Grandma did. He will show up to vote and I don't like what he has to say. |
Well, he's a Muslim supported by Louis Farrakhan so he probably does not care much what you have to say. He will gladly disarm you so his thug supporters have free reign. Think it couldn't get much worse after Julia, it just did. |
