I went to the morning session of the open range day today. It was windy, cold, and I froze my butt off; but it was fun.

Finding the place wasn't too hard at all since it was directly off HWY 59 in Lincoln, the only thing that would have been nice would be a sign showing which gate to go into.

The setup was the normal shoot in the pasture thing that is done nationwide, everyone pulled in and drove about 75 yards up behind the house before parking and setting up a firing line just a few feet behind the vehicles. Numerous different styles of rifles were present as were numerous different levels of shooters.

The range was laid out with three different sets of IPSC paper targets at 100 yards with orange dots for zeroing along with some metal circular gongs at 200, 300 and 400 yards. There was also the IPSC style metal gongs set at 400, 500, and 600 yards. Each one was painted white with a neon 3,4,5 or 6 on it to show the range. The targets were spread out in a meandering line to take advantage of the natural lay of the land, even with that though I never had to move the muzzle more than a few inches each way to swing from one target to the next. There was a "Tango" circular target set up at 400 yards to shoot at, the difference being that this one was on the other side of an old sheet metal storage shed that you had to shoot through to engage.

Jaycee helped me quite a bit at first when I was struggling to get my new rifle on target, it was the first time I've been able to shoot it and it took one of us spotting with the other shooting to get it down on paper, after that it was the normal zeroing. I was able to shoot past 300 yards for the first time ever and it was nice to be behind a bolt rifle again after a three year break. I felt that I did pretty well at the 400 yard gong as long as I remembered the correct way to turn my comeups . The 500 and 600 yard gongs were a completely different matter though, due to driver error and fighting the wind I was only able to make a few hits each on them.

Talking to Jaycee and his partner who owns the land it sounds like they have big plans for the future. At the moment they have out to 600 yards set up and said that the are only reason they did not have out to 1000 yards is that they are currently limited by not having enough steel targets. The owner (I forgot his name) was pointing out where they are going to eventually remove some trees to make a firing lane and will then be able to have a 1 mile range, ends up that the owner owns pretty much everything in sight on that side of the road and it is a whole lot of land. Plans at the moment are for them to try and have an open range day like this every few months or so.

ETA: there are a few pics up on Specters facebook page.

Sounds like something that is needed in NWA.  I'd like to take one of his classes when he gets them up and going.

You must have been down on the right end of the firing line.  My group was on the left.  That was the coldest 45° I've ever experienced, but it was a fun day none the less.  Wishing Jaycee and Johnny a lot of success so we can continue to have access to Johnny's land.

Target 1 was paper at 100yds.
Target 2 was 10" steel at 210yds.
Target A was 8" steel at 300yds.
Target 3 was 10" steel at 330yds.
Target B was 10" steel at 390yds.
Target T was 12" steel behind the shed at 440yds.
Target 4 was 20x12 torso at 435yds.
Target 5 was 20x12 torso at 530yds.
There was a 20x12 torso with 5" flapper at 557yds.
Target 6 was a 20x12 torso that we were unable to range.  Due to the drop we were using it's most likely in the 620-640yd range.
There was a 6" plate hanging around 620-630yds which we were calling the MOA target, but it was probably a little smaller at that point.
Target $ was an unknown size and unknown distance.  We ranged it at 550yds, but visually it appeared to be 650-700yds.  We had a very hard time hitting that.  As we found out later, it was an optical illusion and it WAS 550yds.  So we were shooting way over it.

This was my first time shooting beyond 200yds and, due to excellent spotters, I was nailing everything up to target 6 without much trouble.  The flapper, the MOA target, and the $ target were all challenging.  I never hit the $ but I was able to get the flapper and MOA targets repeatedly once I got dialed in.

I can't wait to go back.  :)

21st I think.

$50 and it'll be all day instead of a 4hr block.

And he should have a 1000yd targets done by then too.

I signed up on FB to go to the next one on the 21st. The cost increase is a real bummer since I will probably only shoot for a few hours.

Anyone else planning on going?

I'll be there if the weather is good.

I agree the price increase is a bummer, but there's nowhere else to shoot that distance around here.

I will begrudgingly pay the price since it is the ONLY place I know of that I can shoot that far. I have never had a chance to shoot steel or to do that kind of distance and it was a freaking blast! Looking forward to seeing if my 16.5" rifle will have enough enough to let me hit 1K.

Jay,

Did you tell a guy about the 308 I had in my shop?  If yes, then thanks a lot,  He bought it today.
