Does anyone have any experience with  the cheaper models?  Are they worth a crap?  Which would you recommend?

Not at home right now, I'll post some info and charts later tonight. I've got an extensive test that was conducted by the Ornithology Lab at Cornell University on spotting scopes.  They went from fairly cheap to top o' the line, and have 'em broken down by price and how they rated.  I'll post it up tonight.

All depends on what you intend to do with it.

Konus has gotten a lot of good reviews for a lower end scopre so when Optics Planet put it on sale a while back I picked one up.  It seems alright so far just checking it out but i haven't had it to the range yet.  I know, not really much help.

It's a few years old, but still good info here:  http://www.allaboutbirds.org/Page.aspx?pid=1039

Click on the Scope Reviews Results Chart on the lower right.

I have this one in the 20-60x60 model and I like it.  The tripod it comes with is not sturdy so I bought a new one and have no complaints.  It's not expensive and I can see targets just fine.

Not sure what you mean by inexpensive, but the Konus has served me well for years, I added a good stand.  I think the scope itself was 2 bills, maybe a bit more.

Check Jarhead top, if it's still up.
