Somebody mentioned in the 'places to shoot' forum that they went to spring valley...I live very close to it and I'm about to get my first AR...how is that range like?  How much does it cost?  (I should stop being lazy and go myself but since I'm lazy...)

It's a nice range, has a 100 yard, 50 & 25 yard section. Benches are nice too, and it's supervised by a RO all the time. Can't recall any anti-black rifle rules or anything like that. They would probably frown on bump firing or the like, but if you're sighting in or whatnot, they're fine with that. I know they allow clays on the berm. I believe you have to bring your own target stand too. Been a while since I was there, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

It's an ODNR range, so it's the same price as the one near me, and I believe that's $3.00 per day for a range permit. You can get one anywhere they sell hunting licences, walmart, kmart, etc.

Its like totally rad!

No, its pretty nice like swingset said. All you need I think is a range permit and a hunting liscence might get you some kind of discount. There is no bump firing and no consecutive bursts over 3 shots last time I checked.

Back in 94-96, I used to have a year pass for the range.  You can get it at the general store in Spring Valley.  Its on 42, as you go down the hill, if you get to 725, you went too far.

If you have/had a hunting license, I think it was cheaper, but I never got the hunt license till '99,  but never did the DNR range pass thing again.

The range was nice when I was there, but no "rapid fire", and all MG's must fire "semi".  Be aware of poor firearm handling by some there, some are full blown idiots.

I think your exempt from general firearm handling etiquette if one or more articles of your clothing include mossy oak cammo.

pretty much what everyone else said above, but its 5$ a day now and I forget for a yr pass. Also
I believe its paper only,so no clays on the berm. They put that shredded rubber in for a back stop so I dont think they allow the clays anymore.I seen  quit a few evil rifles there, but no rapid fire

It's OK, used to be $10 a year if you had a hunt or fish lic., the Govenor felt the need to collect more money and changed that to $25 this past year.

They added lead containment last year, that means only paper targets, the have fence to afix them to and provide laundry clips to do so.

Handguns may only be used at the 25 yard line now (and sometimes I feel silly firing 9.5" 480 at 25 yards).

No centerfire rifles at 25 yrds with concent of RO (usually if it is not crowded and you need to sight ina new set-up this is never a problem).

Allbench are covered, this is nice in rain and snow.

The only place I have seen 50 BMG's used is past the benchs and not into the rubber.

There is a target and walk around 3D archery range, these are free

You can shoot clays in the designated area (top of the hill when you first turn in), you must provide clays and thrower yourself, this to is also free.  You only pay for the rifle range.  You can buy a ticket at any wal-mart or anywhere else that sells fishing licenses.

heres the skinny on sprig valley i was there about one month ago to shoot my AR-15. it s pretty nice like they all said you need a range pass to shoot there it is $5 a day or for a year membership it is $25 - $30 per year wait till febuary to get the year pass because they all expire in febuary sometime (dont make since to buy a year pass when there is only 2 months left, unless you plan on going at least 5 times before febuary then you should buy a year pass other wise just buy the one day) the only thing that i dont like about it is like thier all saying no rapid fire you can even fire 2 - 3 shoots fast one shot per second is the fastest your aloud to shoot other than that it is pretty nice. you only need a range pass to fire on the range they have a crossbow / bow and arrow section (free of charge) and a place where you can shoot clay birds (bring your own thrower) the range is covered the clay birds is totally open and i coulndt tell you about the bow and arrow section because i ant into that but all in all it is REALLY NICE AND CLEAN (the portalet really sinks its ok if your taking a piss but if you need to take a crap do so before you go GROSS!!) EVEN FOR A HILLBILLY LOL i would give it an A

when my dad use to take me there when i was a younger buck we always had a problem finding the place where you bought your pass.  It would make more sense if they sold them at the range but NO, you had to drive to some little general store and buy it there.  Since i joined FSA i have not been back there.  We always went on the weekend and it was usually crowded.  We always had to wait to get a spot on the rifle range so we would just always shoot clays.

There is NO MORE rapid firing allowed.  Everything must be slowfire.  Also, like Dan12 said paper targets only. They do not allow firing into the backstop/containment media without a target.  Suposedly, you will be kicked out for violating these rules.  I miss the days of shooting clays on the backstop, but then again, now they have all the benches on concrete and under a roof as well as gravel walkways and concrete to access your target.(No more muddy shoes!) Fair trade???hinking.gif

no more muddy shoes?  Ha.  Whats the fun without a little dirt and mud.

JME, we can just go back out to Millers and tear up the berm.  We might need a dump truck load of dirt to take with us though.
