My next major gun purchase will be a AR.
I want it in either 5.56 or 6.8. What is a good brand to get that wont cost me a kidney? |
|
Go with 5.56 right now. Ammo is beyond scare for the 6.8. Complete rifles - I would go with a Rock River, Smith and Wesson or Stag. These will all be in the 8-900 range. Go DPMS if you absolutly have to save a few bucks, but you would be happier in the long run with one of those i mentioned. If you want to save a few bucks and customize a bit more, you could buy a lower and upper seperate. A stripped lower, lower parts kit and a stock should run you about 300 right now. Lowers are super easy to put together and most of us here have done 1 or more. Good uppers can be had starting at 450 or so. |

While I think it's a bad-ass round, like cowboy said ammo is pretty scarce. And it won't cost you a kidney, it'll cost you both kidneys and possibly one of your nuts. I'm a big fan of RRA FWIW. I really like their trigger, nice finish, very accurate. I bought mine a long time ago so I'm not sure if their quality is at the same level as it was when I bought mine. I'm sure others can weigh in on this. |

How do i go about getting a parts list? Whats wrong with magpul? Nothing wrong with them. They just take too long to ship. Like, weeks too long. Or months. Always order Magpul stuff. And always get it from somebody BESIDES Magpul. Who has the best prices on magpul? |

All the info you need to put together a lower : http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782 For magpul grips and stocks and what not, whoever has them in stock is usually the best deal. I usually use Bravo Company. Actually mags are pretty much the same way. |

If you will buy all your parts, I will be happy to assist you in building the lower. If you build it yourself you will know every part that goes into. This helps when you are troubleshooting any issues that may arise down the road. (i.e. broken parts) Even though it is rare, broken parts do happen. I have been using area 51 tactical for a lot of my stuff. The carry magpul and usually have it in stock along with pretty good prices. They also carry uppers, last I looked all they had in stock was DPMS uppers. While they will do the job, I would recommend to wait and find a RRA, LMT, Armalite, or Colt upper even if you have to buy it used. If you gonna skimp on parts, don't skimp on the upper or lower. You can always upgrade lower end furniture easier and cheaper then the main gun. Just my 2 cents. IM me for my phone number if you would like help building the gun it self when you get the parts. Edit: And make sure to spend your cash on the gun itself and use the original iron sigts, then save up later for any optics/sights systems. |

Is it safe to assume that they sell part kits? or do i buy each part separate? |

Is it safe to assume that they sell part kits? or do i buy each part separate? You will want to buy a lower parts kit or LPK. You can buy all the parts seperate, but it will cost you a arm and a leg. LPK is gonna run you between $60-$100 depending where you buy and what brand. Bullseye Guns and Ammo in LR normally has some DPMS in stock for $70 bucks. Again, its DPMS. But if you cant find anything else..... |

6.8 is a much better round but with all that is going on it will cost you almost if not more than a $1 a round for 6.8 ammo. Go for an AR in 5.56 so you can shoot .223 from Wal-Mart and order bulk 5.56 offline. I perfer Rock River Arms (this is just my preference, you will get many more for the other members).

FWIW I had read on this site that generally it's cheaper to buy a complete upper/lower rather than building them yourself. But I assume that's from scratch. Once you've already acquired some parts it may be cheaper to buy what you need to finish another one. The other factor is that, at least in recent past, some parts have been extremely hard to find and order. I think in many instances it's like buying a new car. If you bought all the pieces in an attempt to build it yourself, it'd be much more expensive rather than buying outright.
As with anything YMMV! |
|
A first AR should be a bare bones iron sighted rifle. Barrel length doesnt really matter. 20, 18, 16, or 14.5. For 99% of shooting around here, a carbine will do just fine. For now you need to learn the AR irons and different controls on the weapon. As you get comfortable, you can personalize and accessorize as you see fit. For now though, crawl. You can walk later. Then one day, Youll be running. Basics first. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

I can build a cheap one for ~600, a good one for ~800 and a top shelf one for ~1000. And I'm talking bare bone rifes, no rails or anything fancy. Those are all at least $200 cheaper than what I would pay at the local fun store. What makes building pricier is adding your own semi-custom touches...a magpul stock and grip instead of a M4 stock and A2 grip....BUIS instead of none.....stuff like that. |

You basically need:
A complete upper with Bolt Carrier Group (might need to add sights or a carry handle depending on what you order). Stripped lower Lower Parts kit Stock and buffer tube No need to buy all the tiny parts separate, these four groups of items will get you covered. |
