I'm about to purchase a flat top M4 style AR with a fixed front sight base like the one below.

I know that an iron rear sight will match height wise with the front. If I decided to add a scope to it in a few months, what keeps the front sight from getting in the way? Do I have to remove it and use a gas block? Would I need to mount the scope higher than it is?

The distance from the objective lense of the scope to the FSB will not be an issue, most times the FSB will just be a dark blur in the bottom of the scope when properly set up.

Good advice already on the optic.

Be aware that the rear BUIS may or may not line up with the FSB. For some stupid reason, Del Ton didn't put an F marked FSB on my flat top middy but put the standard .040" shorter version on - it doesn't line up with my BUIS.

Translated for those who ask stupid questions- it all but disappears with magnified optics [3x mag and up.]

If you still find it in the way, though, you can add on an optic riser rail, which can be had for anywhere from $12 up to, well, a hell of a lot.

I was cutting him some slack.  We share the same name so I gotta take it easy on the guy from time to time.

It may not matter. A friend thinks that he saw what I want with a single rail gas block instead of an FSB.  I'll find out tomorrow if the dealer still has it and will do a layaway until my tax $$ show up.

People worry WAY too much about the FSB...

I used an ACOG for 15 freaking months in Iraq and never once did I think..."God I wish I had a flip up front site! This FSB is driving me nuts!"

You really don't even notice it at all...

Guess the front flip up is more tacticool...

Maybe that's why I get no support......pft.

And I agree....don't stress over that front sight. It won't stop you.

If I didn't notice this, then you won't notice the FSB.

Mine got in my way so I took it off and added a Brownells gas block with top rail and a flip up BUIS so through the lens of the scopew their is nothing between mmy eye and the target.

What's the story on that?

Not my pic:

With this acog, the FSB is clearly evident.  However, since the shooter is focusing on the target, which he has centered, the FSB isn't a big issue.

I that why I use an A2 upper, with scopes and red dots, if they fail you have iron sights to go quickly.

Two things:

1. I'm not Bradd but the BUIS in probably in front of the ACOG as 4x ACOGS have shitty eye relief. You generally have to pull them so far back on the receiver that there is not a lot of room left over for a BUIS. I've never seen someone use a fixed one in front of an ACOG but I guess it works. If the optic ever went TU then Bradd would flip the arms levers and remove it. BUIS is already up.

2. I'm nowhere near an optical enginerd but I'm pretty sure the human eye and a camera lens see magnification differently. That picture should not be totally representative of how a person would see through it.

1. OK, that makes sense.  Thanks.

2. That's about right.  The FSB in that pic is way more noticable than mine is through my TA33.
