It looks like I will be taking the position in Nashville and I am coming down the weekend after next to have a look around. I will need to rent a place until my wife and daughter move down after the end of the school year (wifes a teacher). I need to live within 30 minutes or so of the Air National Guard Base. I would prefer something somewhat rural. I heard Lebanon is a great place so I plan on checking out apartments, condos, homes for rent there.

Do you all have any other suggestions?
Also, if any of you hear of any teaching positions (grades 4,5,6) in Nashville or within 30-45 minutes of the base, please let me know so my wife can apply.

Any advice, suggestions, input will be appreciated!

Thanks

I live in Lebanon and I really like it.  I am not sure where the base is but if it is anywhere close to the airport you can be there in less than 30min.  There are several apartments here in town.  The school system here is pretty good there is a county school district and a city school district.  Our son goes to Tuckers Crossroads (county) and we really like it.  Shoot me a pm sometime once you get down here. If you need anything let me know I am off work right now do to an accident so I am not busy unless I have therapy.

Nashville Air National Guard Base is at the Nashville International Airport (BNA), on the Murfreesboro Road side of the airport.

Best place to be looking is Rutherford Co., IMO. They actually pay their teachers more than Nashville does.

FWIW, my Dad retired from the TN ANG (fulltime) after 37 years, as a Chief Mst. Sgt. & won the Minuteman Award twice.

Shoot me an IM when you get close & I'll help however I can.

Hermitage is a little closer to Nashville than Lebanon right on I-40 also...but the whole area is nice.  You want more country try Gallatin right next door to Leb.  You wanna be closer to downtown/airport try Hermitage or Mount Juliet.  You have kids?  (Just thinking about schools and such)

He Guys,
I was passed over for the Nashville Position and I was heartbroken. Man the folks at that base were the nicest people in the world (as were the majority of the people we met in Nville) and I sure wanted to work with them. However, it wasn't not meant to be. I am now going to try McGhee-Tyson and sure could use your prayers that this one pans out.

I also need to start scouting places to live near McGhee-Tyson. Any suggestions on places to live and good schools where my wife might apply within a half hour or so of the base?

Thanks for the info. I can't wait to get back down South!

Metro Knoxville is a good place to call home.  I'm not a teacher, but rumor is that Blount County/Maryville schools (where McGhee Tyson is located) tend to pay better than Knox County.  Anderson County (Oak Ridge) tends to pay better as well (rumor).  You could reach the base from Oak Ridge in around 30 minutes via I-40 and I-140.    For your daughter, the school systems mentioned above are supposed to be good.  West Knox County also has excellent schools.  Bluegrass Elementary and AL Lotts Elementary both rate at/near the top, as are the middle and high school they feed.   Farragut schools (K-12) also rate well.  South Knoxville schools (also fairly close to US129) are overall not very good––this from a born and raised South Knoxvillian, so I live in West Knox now.

I haven't been apartment looking in 10 years, but Louisville (Blount County near airbase) has quite a few apartments (cheaper––not necessarily as nice).  West Knoxville also has quite a few (many newer and nicer), but costs tend to be higher.

Good luck with the job application.
