Just a reminder that gun control ain't the only thing we're up against...

Tax Reform Becomes Next Big Project for...

Referring to Gov. Kitzhaber,

"“I think he’s the ideal person to lead the charge,” said Sen. Ginny Burdick, D-Portland, who chairs the Senate Finance and Revenue Committee and has been a strong advocate of reducing the state’s reliance on income taxes. “He’s a very popular governor and I think the just-completed special session will enhance his credibility.”"

Bold added for effect.  Note that "reducing the state's reliance on income taxes" universally means, enacting a sales tax as well... with zero reduction to income taxes.

""If you had less reliance on the income tax and some kind of consumption tax, you would tend to stabilize the tax structure,” Burdick said."

You know, Ginny, another way to stabilize the tax structure in an income-tax-reliant state would be to actually give a shit about things like private-sector job growth, something Democrat-run Oregon seems particularly adept at DIScouraging.

Want a sales tax?  Fine... permanently lower, or completely eliminate the income tax.  You can't have both

* in the interest of full disclosure, I personally would prefer a sales tax to an income tax, but it would take total (or near-total, with a permanent cap) elimination of the income tax... as well as a drastic reduction in the size of state government... for me to support the change.  None of which is likely to happen in my lifetime, in this state, so... oh well.

I've discussed this at length with my state rep. The plan that he had in mind, which I had no issue with was to implement a sales tax with a corresponding reduction in the state income tax. Any future tax increase of either has to go to a public vote for approval.

Born and raised Oregonian here that would not mind a sales tax if it meant a good reduction or elimination of the income tax. It means my taxes would be more regulated by ME, by what I buy and where I buy it. We could all propose what-if scenarios until we were blue in the face though... I'd have to see the full text of any proposed change before I endorse/reject it of course.

Two things in this world you never want to hear:

"We're from the government and we're here to help"

and

"We're from the government and we want to change how we are taxing you"

In both instances you are guaranteed to get a fucking which will not end soon, if ever.

A sales tax means more taxes, net -  not less.  That's why these politicians want it.

More net taxes means YOU'RE paying more taxes and getting LESS money in your pocket, whether that's April 15th or every day of the year.  And remember........

sales taxes aren't refunded to you later on if you paid too much

Don't ever give them another way to reach into your pocket. I can't believe how many people are fooled by the "we will reduce your income tax" lie.

Do not vote in Sales Tax.

They will not get rid of the income tax, and will just blow the money on bullshit.

If there was a way to GUARANTEE a complete ELIMINATION of the state tax if a sales tax was adopted, then that would be awesome. That wont happen though.

All for a sales tax, the day after the state income tax is abolished.

Sales tax.  This is what prompted me to register  to vote.  Daniel is truly right.  It is another way to take more income away from us.

Do not be misled.  Do not entertain sales tax with thoughts that income tax may be reduced.  NO SALES TAX

After residing for 40 years in a state with the highest taxes in the nation, I can comfortably say it's "Bullshit" when they talk about reducing Taxes.
It's a matter of you choosing the caliber gun, & them shooting you in the foot with it.

ugh.  Not this crap again.  I *might* be for a sales tax if and only IF they killed property tax AND income tax and made it completely impossible for the meddlers down in salem to enact any taxes on either at any point in the future.  But then again why the F can't they just figure out how to run the state more like a business and cut the fat like everyone else in the state has to do because of the BS they try to cram down our collective throats?  It would also help if they didn't do their best to throw corps and businesses under the bus and chase them out of the state.

Sales tax, a way to nickel and dime you to death every time you spend money.  I've got family in CA and they are taxed to death with high sales, property and income taxes.  Another Democrat run strong hold.  Don't let 'em get a foot in the door.  The taxes may start low but will increase steadily.  Another thing to consider; state income and property taxes are deductible from your federal taxes, whereas sales taxes generally are not.  Go buy a $40K new truck and see how much you enjoy paying up to another $4K in sales taxes like they do in CA.

Create more jobs and you will automatically generate more state income though income taxes.  Gee, what a novel idea!  Sales tax in OR, NO thank you.
