So I went into the security store in Hillsboro the other day for the first time and saw that they had a "all firearms must be inspected prior to entry" sign on the door. I half jokingly asked the guy at the counter if that applied to CHL holders and he said "all firearms means, all firearms, are you carrying now?"
I had to actually have my gun uloaded in the store. Now I know we all have to deal with this at the gun/hottub show but this is the first I've experienced it at a gun store and to be honest, it's kept me from going back. Too bad because they have a lot of cool stuff in there plus AR's still in stock. |
|
The security store gunroom staff, form my experience going there since it opened, is pretty ignorant. I've seen a registered AR pistol with a VFG displayed on the wall (no, it wasnt an SBR). And i've seen the staff 'play' with the toys way more than would seem safe. They also spout off all manor of just straight up wrong information about pretty much every firearm in there. They have GSG-5P's for $950. 'nuff said.
But if you go in there expecting all that, then its a nice place to feed your touchy-feely impulses, as they do have alot of fun stuff in there. They still have a couple barrels of AK and AR 30rnd mags for pretty cheap (poor quality, but replace the followers and you're GTG) Take everything the staff says with a pinch (or seven) of salt. So my advice is, just dont burden the staff with the knowledge of your pistol. They wont have to wreak their brains trying to figure out what to do with you and you wont have to remove your protection. Win-win! |
|
look around as you enter all gun stores you may be suprised. I know that keiths, fishermans supply and sportsmans whorehouse all have "posted" no loaded weapons unless you are an on duity LEO for keiths anyhow.
not sure what the reason for the policy is, as I have never let the sigh in the window bother me. |
|
I have gone there a few times and they have been ok to me and I have not noticed bad handling skills. I will say that I usually disregard those signs when I have my carry gun on me. Beavercreek Armory has the same signs and I never check my gun in. Personally I think its stupid if you are legally carrying, but if you are bringing in a bag full of guns thats a whole different story.
I will say that I have gotten a few good deals there since they have been open, and its nice to have a shop stocking that stuff close to my house. But alot of the stuff is priced a bit on the high side IMO, but storefronts aren't free and instant gratification usually comes with a price. |

give me a break.
so what, they post a sign, ask you to do something, big deal. if you don't like it, don't tell, or don't go in. i have seen many of you handle firearms, and yes, I would post a sign like that too. its a GREAT store. they have a bunch of cool stuff. it is a business, and yes, they have to make money, so what? not everyone can sell for a $1 over cost, at least for long. NoHair I think Daniel made the point that he hasn't gone back and he does have the right to post his experience here. But if berating the guy for sharing his experience in a discussion forum makes you feel better about yourself, then please flame away. And no, a business that sells everything for a dollar over cost won't sell things for long. Neither will one that sells them too high either. I guess if enough people come in to play with the shiny things, they'll stay in business. Time will tell. I've been in there twice and was told grossly inaccurate information about products both times. I don't rely solely on gun counter sales associates for my information, but there are those who go into a gun store with legitimate questions about products. In a perfect world they would be able to get reliable answers from store personnel, but that's not always the case. I've noticed that at many gun shops there seems to be an inordinate number of sales folk who don't really know what they're talking about, but think they do and will be happy to let you know it. It's not unique to the gun sales industry, but it certainly is more prevalent there. So is the condescending attitude that seems to have taken hold at many gun shops. I'll bet that every person reading this has had at least one experience like that at a gun shop. The disdain, sneers and mocking that follows a legitimate question about a caliber, manufacturer, style, etc. (The Gun Room anyone?) I can't recall the last time I was treated rudely at Sears because I expressed interest in a Maytag over a Kenmore. But I was treated pretty shabbily at The Security Store for something akin to that. Then I was subjected to a long discourse about how a particular law enforcement agency was using Brand-X because blah, blah, blah... And they claim that they use it because blah, blah, blah. Problem was, I worked for that law enforcement agency for years and they never used Brand-X. Ever. I let the guy talk. Then I told him what I knew and I left. That was my second and last time in there. Say what you will about it, but good customer service goes a long way with me. I'd much rather have a sales associate tell me that they don't know the answer and then look it up, make a phone call or find someone who does know, than one who invents a story and then spouts off a plethora of wildly inaccurate garbage. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. |

The guy behind the gun counter at least knew who "Michale Machines" was, and what they built who TNW was, Who Toad Baliey was, and who Kevin Shaw is. Sounds pretty knowledgeable to me. . . . .

I really think it's comical how most gun shops have signs that say something to the effect of "All actions must be open and guns unloaded at time of entry" yet Sportsmans Whorehouse has a big sign that reads "All firearms must be checked in at the front counter EXCEPT firearms legally carried under ORS ###.###"
So a big chain store trusts us with our personal guns, but small time mom and pop shops that we SHOULD support don't? ![]()

I understand why. They probably don't care if they never see your gun, but they probably have old ladies come in with a loaded CCW and want to test fit holsters. I went to look at a gun for a FTF transaction, guy hands me the gun, I rack the slide, son of a bitch is LOADED! |
|
I actually asked one of the instructors at The Barons Den about this. They have a no loaded weapons policy, but don't go balls out enforcing it if you keep your ccw out of sight.
He said that a customer had pulled his carry gun out to show someone, and the guy he handed it to accidentally fired off a round right in the store! They just decided that it would be one too many things for the staff to deal with, and the sign keeps the concealed guns in thier holsters... |

And they had NO idea who Kevin Shaw was....I even put them to the test. I asked a couple of questions about certain firearms, and they really DON'T know their stuff at all. I was told the Coharie Arms clone has a gas tube so is more reliable!!! Not all gun owners are as safe as others, just read all the I almost drew down on the Wal-Mart door checker threads on ARFCOM and you'd understand why.
Not sure why folks get so upset about not being able to carry while in a gun store or at the gun show. It's the gun-free zones I'm concerned about, isn't that where you are most vulnerable and not allowed to defend yourself. A gun store/gun show is about the safest place one could be in the event of a crime. |
| Say what you will about this place, but I have bought a very nice Fort Knox safe from them in the past at a REMARKABLE price and I just picked up a case of ammo last week and I paid no where NEAR what the listed price was. I have no problems going back as they seem very willing to wheel and deal on prices. |

I must say I have been in there 5 or 6 times now and bought a bunch of small stuff. They have all been pretty knowledgeable on firearms, very friendly and they always had EVERYTHING I was looking for. To my knowledge there are 4 guys that work in the facility. 2 younger guys (one thats a little overzealous), and one that seems to know pretty much whats up, the owner whom I have met once and talked on the phone with several times(very knowledgeable and loves his fiddies), and the guy that runs the security part that is not so up on guns but is super nice and has helped me a couple times. really I find some of this stuff people are saying here really hard to believe. Usually I don't go to a store like that to acquire information, its to buy stuff I am looking for and sometimes not looking for. I think people need to cut them a break. They have a crap load of EBRs and all the stuff to go with it. Maybe I don't get out much, but this is the only store I have found an AK flat instock and on the wall and at a decent price IMO (they even had the rivets and all the other stuff to build it there too). And you really have to hand it to them for doing this when they could be shut down in a very short period of time because of the incoming admin in WA DC.
And even my wife made the comment that its like a bunch of old women in here. Maybe thats why the ORHTF is a little slow on the posts lately. |
"OK" So who is the scruffy skinny kid who where the Glock sports Nascar shirt. He told me he was the store weapons expert. and did all the optic mounting etc. So I did what some of you have done I asked some ? that I had personal exp. with. All I can say is they aren't very bright.... And they don"t have a good handle on gun laws. I to saw the vertical grip on the pistol. I hope it's gone I would hate to see them lose ther FLL for being dumb.

But who knows - they could have ignored the advice or simply forgot about it later and put it on again. I wish they'd do a little bit of research before doing stuff like that though, i dont want to see the place get shut down. |

I'm not commenting on whether they know their stuff or not, it's the gun friendly atmosphere I'm looking for. I can open carry walking down the street outside their store but once I enter I have to disarm?
And "don't ask, don't tell" isn't good enough because that still indicates the wrong attitude. Punishing the majority because a few idiots have an AD is what the same position the freedom haters take. One bad firearm incident doesn't mean we should all lose our rights. Everyone here would be infuriated if Fred Meyer put up a "check your guns at the door" sign, I hold gun stores to the same standard. But that's just me. |

Hmmmm, he told me that a cop came in a while ago, and he "dove" across the counter to get the grip off before the cop saw it. Well, that's what he told me. Might have been a different gun. No gun signs? Yeah they have those at movie theaters too. Like the yellow speed warning signs, I almost look at them as a challenge for how badly I can violate them. I'm up to two guns, a beer and some cookies for Quantum of Soulless. |
| Amazing how many gun "experts" work at gun shops. I generally just take it with a grain of salt and smile and nod. Kind of like I do with customers who irritate me. Be glad you have a gun store where you live. My nearest store with any inventory at all is 32 miles away, and they are somewhat limited but improving on AR accessory's. Where is this security store located? I may have to check it out the next time I am in town. |

Highway 8 in Hillsboro, about 70 feet west of Brookwood. Near the Dairy Queen. Look for the black painted armored truck/ambulance thing on the north side of the road. Parking is in the gravel yard in back. I think I might stop in there tomorrow to get a look at their fakepoint prices... plus handle a few AK's and AR's |

I went in before they started dealing firearms after I met the one of the owners at the Portland Gun and Knife show. Seemed like an OK guy so I figured my folks and I would check out the store.
Went in hoping to purchase a nice digital recorder with phone attachment(which they didn't have or know anything about) and was amazed at the astronomical prices and the "can I help you?!" attitude of the staff. Was very rude like I was distracting him from his break, didn't know anything about what they were selling, when asked about products, the rep. kept saying, "there is info in the manual" and I could read about it after I purchased it!! Ended up going to Radio Shack, purchased the SAME recorder for $100 less and the sales guy was much more helpful and knowledgeable. Needless to say, I WILL NOT BE going back to The Security Store. A quote I recently read, "Only people deserving to be shot need to know I'm carrying." |
