Just returned from the Fairfield Police Department. I submitted my pistol permit application and they fingerprinted me. There were several signs in the fingerprinting room that said the approximate processing time for pistol app was 16 weeks. Wow, I really didn't think it take quite so long. Although, I'm originally from Suffolk County, NY, on LI, where the wait time is closer to 7-9 months. So hey, it's all relative. Glad I finally got the ball rolling.

Max 8 weeks and that's state law. No bullshit. File appeal if it's longer than that.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely keep that in mind if the time comes.

The state mandated statute indicates eight weeks to approve or deny the pistol permit application. Many towns and cites ignore that statutory time mandate and take longer, sometimes much longer. There is no  punishment accessed on the local issuing authority for missing the statutory mandated time lines. Generally they'll issue the temporary permit within three sometimes four months. Some locations like New Haven and Bridgeport have been known to take upwards of six months to almost a year to approve the application.

See the CCDL Permit to Carry Time Mandates and CT Carry Permit Timelines for the various time mandates the local issuing authority is supposed to follow. You can then follow up with both the town and with the state to see when each time mandate was or was not met. Make sure to keep copious notes of people you talked to, dates and times. Then when the town intentionally misses the time mandates you can file an appeal with BFPE (see BFPE How do I Appeal) to get the ball rolling on an appeal.

I went to get fingerprint cards done for an SBR and my town had, almost, the same sign posted. I informed an officer that it went against state law. When I arrived, the following day, to pickup my paperwork, the sign was removed.

Ballsy, to offend the PD, BEFORE getting the signature

My town has a resident trooper. I was out of the country as the 8 week deadline approached. Had about 15 messages on my home phone when I got back. Did the interview and had the temp permit 2 days later. Overall, did not meet the 8 week deadline, but it wasn't the States fault, only a few days late IIRC...

It's not offensive it's the regulation. He put them straight and educated them, they probably went to the regs and learned something.

If we don't hold them accountable expect abuses.

Yep, had to have an interview with the resident trooper. Nice guy, see him around town quite often. He always remembers me, as there was a person in South Carolina, with the same name as mine, and DOB, except the year, who was arrested for DWI and ended up kicking out the windows of a cruiser. I was flagged by the FBI for "further review" hence the interview...

Enfield interviews you , your neighbors , family members and employers . They did it to my dad and it took the full 8 weeks maybe more. Glad I got mine years ago I swear it only took a 3 weeks or so ,it was quick.

That is highly wrong. I would contact Rich at CTCarry about the interview of neighbors, and employer. Also go to the CTCarry site to learn about how to handle the 8 week deadline.

I was just busting balls Cav, I completely agree with his saying something.  Just the thought of the PD possibly losing your form 1, or your chief being "too busy" to sign it, because you called them out is nerve racking  I would have gotten the sig, then said something.  At least User got his sig and got to see that they took the sign down.  Nicely done!

The only reason to go to CTcarry is if you need a press release. Fairly useless.
Try this. http://ctpistolpermitissues.com
File the appeal after 8 weeks. Do not wait. Appeal dates are about 1+ years out and they are always threatening to do away with the review board.

gotta disagree

not a huge fan of Rich B, but he and ctcarry do good work for pistol permit issues

they do alot of behind the scene stuff that ccdl/ctpistolpermitissues may take the spotlight for  ( both of those orgs are basically the same org as Hardy is part of CCDL)

and  now im IN before the #butthurt starts

All right, it came! I just received the letter from Fairfield PD that my permit was approved and I can go pick it up. Submitted 2/24, approval letter sent on 4/16. A day less than 8 weeks. I'm about to double the size of my gun collection - to two!

Mikehikes: Great, what are you going to get...

I would love for state politics/laws to NOT be a factor in answering this, but it must be. I'm originally from Long Island and I still shoot there often. If I were to get a handgun with my shiny new CT permit, I could never bring it into NYS to shoot with friends and family. I'm sure you guys are aware, NY doesn't recognize any other state's permit. So, as much as I'd love to go handgun shopping, and I will before too long, now isn't the time.

First up will be a 10/22 Takedown. Plinking, .22 matches, sounds good. I compete whenever I can with my 870 Police, definitely looking forward to branching out a bit.
