Has anyone seen any regulations or had a DNR interaction regarding using thermal for deer hunting? I am not talking about extending hunting hours into the dark but using it for either spotting before daylight and using it to position oneself or using to find them in grass/cover in daylight. I looked and couldn't find anything specific on NV/Thermal aside the illumination laws and no illumination allowed for coyote hunting at all during deer season. I should also add... I used a monocular with no ability to put it on the gun. It was fantastic. |

I dont know why you couldnt. I know you can't use drones to recover/find wounded deer that said last year we were in the middle of 500ac no roads through it and had a drone fly over us in the dark walking to the truck weirdest damn thing |

I found these guys advertising drone deer recovery in Iowa. Has something changed with that law recently or are they just doing the needful against a totally b*(&^$it law. Shows reviews dated this fall but doesn't give locations. Drone deer recovery in Iowa |

Drone deer recovery in Iowa As a side note, we did use thermal to track a deer. Although it was only 60 yards or so it was definitely interesting to be able to see the blood on the ground with it. |

Hopefully they get it changed so you can use a thermal drone for recovery purposes. I get why they wouldn't want you to use a drone for scouting, fine whatever but letting a deer go to waste is not acceptable when this technology could close that gap. Finally found this after several attempts searching the Iowa Code. Since they call a drone an aircraft in Iowa Code it appears to still be a no go activity. I could not find anything that would prohibit you from using a handheld Thermal to search for a downed deer or for hunting, scouting. If anyone finds something different let me know. I know I use my monocular Thermal unit to walk out to the blind in the dark and before I leave if it is dark so I dont bump anything. 481A.120 Hunting from aircraft or snowmobiles prohibited.
