| Wife and I will be in Denver for 4 days, staying near the downtown performing arts complex. Would appreciate any suggestions for things to see & do, eateries, micro-breweries, etc. Weather permitting we'll be looking for some nearby easy day-hikes, etc. Thanks. |
| When are you guys coming out? If the weather is warm, Little Man Ice Cream is one of my favorite places to go. You could drive a little south and check out Garden of the Gods and do some walking around there as well. There's plenty of decent hiking trails around Boulder too if you can deal with the hippies and hipsters. |

You can't throw a rock in this state without hitting a microbrewery anymore. Unfortunately, I've lost track and am not sure I know any well enough to recommend.
There are a few just south of downtown, maybe just barely beyond walking distance, Black Sky and one whose name escapes me. Restaurants...again, you can't throw that same rock without also hitting a good Mexican place. I mean, hell, we've got both Taco Bell and Del Taco! |

I'm a fan of Santiago's when I want Mexican food in Denver If you are here on the first Saturday of the month, the Denver art museum is free. Santiagos is good. For OP's benefit: local chain. Not saying that I'd kill for their green chili, but a kneecapping isn't out of the question. So are the various Chubby's and Papa Chino's. However, don't go into one of them and mention any of the others: each one is owned by one faction of the same family that seems to be constantly feuding and suing each other over I-don't-know-what. There's a local 24-hour chain called Tacos Rapidos, where I first learned about carne asada fries. Good stuff, but it had to have been a stoner who had that idea. There's one restaurant at Colfax and Lipan, across from the RTD station, that used to be called 'Las Fuentes." I loved it under that name. I haven't been there since the name change, but it's still there. I would almost suggest just cruising south Federal Boulevard until you see something interesting. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants alternating with Vietnamese. I haven't seen bun bo hue made out of carne de cabeza yet, but it has to be out there. |

The one on 38th is the best. I would have smothered fries 7 days a week if my heart could handle it. 1up and 2up are fun. They're bars/arcades with old school games. It's kind of what Dave & Buster's would be if it was a dive. Falling Rock is right next to 1up. It's a fantastic bar without a great selection and good food. |

mexican joint north of 5th ave on santa fe. east side of the road. No one se' hablo' english'. But can slap a killer breakfast or lunch burrito together before you can say gracias. Use to be a gas station. IIRC featured on Triple D, written about in the denver dump and other periodicals. When down south it's one of our favorite sunday morning stops.
OR if the OP is so inclined, PETE'S KITCHEN Colfax and High ? st. Just east of the Satyre lounge. Open 24/7. I suggest you wash down your 4 a.m. breakfast with one of their chocolate shakes. http://www.petesrestaurants.com/PetesKitchen.html |

You had to bring up the smothered fries just as I was thinking I should de-fatass-ify myself for summer. mexican joint north of 5th ave on santa fe. east side of the road. No one se' hablo' english'. Come to think of it there's also a hot dog place 2-3 blocks south of there on Santa Fe that's pretty good by not-in-Chicago standards. |

They're just north of Tribe ? tattoo same side of the road. |

| Had a great time in both Denver and Fort Collins, visiting with our oldest son / wife and youngest daughter / fiance, who all just moved to CO earlier this month. Had dinner at a great little Italian place, Undici Restorante, on 1200 E Hampden Ave. Had lunch / drinks at Wahoos on 20th / Sherman. Margarita's were awesome!! Had lunch in Arvada at The School House, their food was excellent and their draft beer selection was outrageous. Hiked the Flatirons area up near boulder, as well as HorseTooth Falls just outside of Ft. Collins - both were just the right amount of distance / elevation for someone who lives in the swamp all year long. Took in a concert at Buell Theatre, then strolled 16th Ave mall around 11pm. Lots of weird / tribe-like people there, pretty much like Austin, TX "drag worms" on Guadalupe St. All in all, a great time was had. Our youngest son and wife will be moving to the Vail area in June, so we'll be coming back to the north central part of CO on a much more frequent basis - and are looking forward to getting to know some CO arfcommers if possible. Cheers. |
| I agree that there seemed to be the potential, especially at night, for some as#ha*t to try something. Not too worried about a single threat, although there were some pretty large 'packs' of locals whom I wouldn't have wanted to take on. How much of a problem is this? |

It happens a fair amount, usually from those "packs" I used to work nights down there. I saw some things. Gunshots were not uncommon, especially the closer you got to LoDo. I don't go down there if I can avoid it. |
I know a guy and his wife got their asses beat down there a month or two ago from a gang of people. Looks like the guy might have said something to one of the group members. ![]() http://kdvr.com/2015/08/16/exclusive-visiting-couple-beaten-attacked-on-16th-street-mall/ |
