Anyone know what the cost of an "obstructed rear plate" ticket is?

Is there a code on the tix? Did you get pulled over for something else and got a break by having it downed to that fine?

The courts are given a range of fine amounts by NYS. The Courts can levy within that range for that particular offense.
In this case around here you'd probably be looking at $75 plus court surcharge.
Some judges around here would probably dismiss the ticket outright depending on how you obstructed the plate

Yes, it was a break.

I don't even write for plates covered by snow when it's been recently snowing.
It's a dick move.
Besides, if its been snowing that recently, I have more important calls I am going on

If they want to pull you over I am sure they could follow you for a short time and they would have a reason.

I can believe it is a violation but it is the first time I have ever heard of anyone getting a ticket for it. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen though.

He stated above the it was a break, so not really a dick move to write that instead of a mover

Right, the guy cut me a break and I am  thankful for that.  Honestly thought I would just get a warning with my FF plates and my trooper sticker but talking to a retired trooper buddy this guy can be by the book so maybe I just accept I got off easy and pony up the money. I was surprised the guy didn't recognize me we have been at a ton of fire calls and car wrecks where he was the responding officer.  I want to say that I have no beef at all with the officer he was decent about it and was just doing his job but I am figuring it is going to cost $160 bucks and I hate giving the state a dime more of my money.

The question now is do I still go to court and fight it after all a snow covered plate on a snowy day is not unheard of the rest of it should be irrelevant (I am sure it wont be to the judge).  I am also guessing in very small town court the trooper wont even show up they only have court one day a month. My concern is the judge will know the guy cut me a break based on the ticket and hit me with a higher fine for fighting it.  Decisions, Decisions.

Our judges in NYC would toss that ticket or reduce the fine. I'd give it a shot.

If he cut you a break in lieu of another observed ( moving ) violation  I would say that you shouldn't fight it, or you could very easily find the obstructed plate ticket yanked and the original violation cited in a new ticket.

This!

You got a nice break.  Pay the fine and move on.

Guarantee that the first thing anyone pulling him over sees is that stop sign shield stuck to his wallet, so he really didn't cut you a break and he damn sure wasn't decent about it, considering you're an active FF in his district and would be the one cutting him out of a car if he wrecked it, transporting him in an ambulance if he got hurt, or fighting the fire if his house went up.  Not to mention the PBA sticker.  With that said, pay the ticket and move on.  Speak to the clerk of the court and you might not have to make an appearance and pay the court costs, just the fine.  YMMV

Eh... Yeah, he could have gone farther with his courtesies, but if you think about it, 20 over is moving right along. He probably just felt that you needed a little reminder of that fact. I've handled hundreds of V&T matters in the firm I used to work for, and truth be told, there really are no guarantees. You set yourself up for a fall if you come to *expect* to get off without a hitch because you're a FF, or your car sports an SP PBA sticker, or other things like that. (although that sticker has saved my ass more than a couple times)  Sounds like you're of a pretty mature mindset about the whole thing. I'm in the "pay it and move on" camp. Personal responsibility and all that...

I think the original reason for getting pulled over is entered in the system. I've read someone got caught speeding and was giving a break by getting that fine because of the border plate. When she tried to fight it, the system showed she was doing 70 in a 55 as the reason for getting pulled over.
