Anyone know what a ticker would before for tire chains? Is it a moving violation? Anyone know if the cable chains will work well with the last snow fall we had?

Heres the law. Looks like a civil infraction. Fine would depnd on the court you got it in. My guess is around $150. For that money and aggrivation just get a good set of winter tires.

Tire chains are a BIG PITA! Once they are on you can't go fast enough to get anywhere soon. They are difficult to install correctly and think about the time you would be using them. I have been where they were required to legally stay on the road. Like in the mountain passes in WA state where I used to live. A good set of tires is a much better choice for around MI.

They tend to chew up the roads far too much.  However, we used them out in Colorado one year Elk Hunting and they saved our butts.  If you are really in the deep snow they work great, but again only for the back-woods emergencies.    As mentioned they can be a little difficult to put on the vehicle, if it's your first time.  So it all depends on your intended use.  General rules for Michigan: yes to off road and no to general street use...

What are you driving in MI that you would consider putting chains on?  I've lived in MI for 26 of my 31 years, and I've never felt the need for chains.  Of course I've never owned a car, so that might be part of it.

That is completely fucking retarded, MICHIGAN of all fucking places bans tire chains?  That's to fucking stupid for words, this is the first I've head of this law.  I was considering getting a set of chains to, my car sucks royal ass in the snow, I spent 45 fucking minutes Friday just getting off my damned street, and that's maybe 1-200 feet.

A good agressive treaded tire should be all you need. I like Kelly tires for the SUV and have BF Goodrich on the Camaro. I didnt have the Camaro out friday, but the ass kicker we got on new years eve of '99 my wife drove it in 6 fresh inches. Didnt get stuck.
My new fusion has 60 series continentals on it. It did very well. They are more of a sport tire though, not my favorite tread rating in this state

That sums it up for me. My town gets plowed and salted only after the city gets plowed. Like today I probable would get stuck at the intersection of my street. I probable would only use them maybe two to three times a year. If you look at the laws it looks to me like if they don't touch the pavement you are good to go.

This is why they aren't allowed right here. You would have some yahoo stopped in the middle of the  road untangling chains from the axle during a white out.
There is no replacement for four wheel drive or at least good tires.

A number of years ago when I heard that studs weren't gonna be allowed in Michigan any more I figured I was going to have to move out, then I heard it was studded tires that were being banned.

But I can't afford 4WD or good tires.  Screw Michigan!

This topic seems deserving of arfcom firemission status.

If you want to use them so bad, use them. You'd have to get caught in the first place. If the weather is so bad you think you need them, the police have alot more to do than be on the look out for tire chains. If you do get caught, you just pay the fine, or go ask the Judge for a break. Isnt like your gonna go to jail or something. I wouldnt think a tire chain ticket would jack up your insurance (but you may want to check on that one). Im sure many of you speed when you can and you dont seem conserned about that.

Chains are legal just have to be on ice or snow and not on bare pavement.

Are tire chains legal in Michigan?

Answer:
MCL 257.710 of the Michigan Vehicle Code covers the use of tire chains, and states that a person may "use a tire chain of reasonable proportion upon a vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other condition tending to cause a vehicle to skid." If used, the chain must not come in contact with the surface of the roadway.
