Anyone know where I can get topo maps of northern IL? I want to take the kids out and do some map and compass training.

Thanks

Check the U.S. Geological survey website, I beleive you can order topo maps there.  They run around $25 each if I remeber.

The other option woudl be hit up your local Gander Mountain, they might carry them too...

Or serach the phone book for a mapping/surveying company in the local area, some of them can provide/sell you the maps.

REI in Oakbrook would have them.

The last time I looked they had an Illinois road atlas that included topographic detail.

I use a site called Topozone.

You can also download the free NASA program (NASA World Wind) that is like Google Earth. It has a function where you can view the topographic maps from US geological surveys.

www.jdmcox.com/

Free software download, and it overlays the aerial photos and topographical map.

Did I mention it's FREE?

You can also get an Illinois Gazeteer at Wally World--it has the whole state.

ETA: You might want to pop into the survival forum--there will be a mountain of advice about this type of thing.
