I'm new to Maryland sort of.  Lived here until I was old enough to leave, left and now I'm back.  Now I'm wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that offers any type of training class.  Specifically Pistol and Carbine training class.

Welcome back to the Fee State.

There used to be a place up in PA that did classes.  There is also a place out in VA that does them as well.  I've been putting off both for way to long.  Someone else will be along soon with more info, the names of both escape me.

Front Sight IIRC offers classes up at Westshore Sportsman's club in Lewisburry PA.  I've not taken a class with them but I was a member of the range.

IMHO the best deal going are the classes held by the FIRE Institute near Pittsburgh.  A longer drive but you get 3 solid days of training for the basic Carbine & Handgun classes.  Once those are taken you can take the Level 2 course (lots of night shooting) or the tactics courses.  I've take numerous FIRE courses and keep going back for more. Pete, Tony, and crew put on a great course geared for the 'Average Joe' or patrolman.

I took a class there in November and it was all around, pretty decent.

Pros-Relatively close, good facility, good instructors, didn't cost too too much, I learned quite a bit.

Cons-Class seemed rushed. I felt they didn't spend as much time explaining and detailing the purpose of the drills/exercises as may have been helpful, at least for my purposes. The limited class size wasn't, they had 5 or 6 more than the limit stated on the website. They had recently gotten in trouble with the county and could no longer shoot after 5PM so shooting time was truncated by a few hours but the price stayed the same.

All told, It was informative, helped me to know my limits and what I need to work on and where I can improve. Gave me a good kick in the ass to get off the couch and trim off some excess weight. Gave me confidence in my gear and shooting skills. Others had their weapons going down all day, but mine both functioned flawlessly.

I'll go there again, maybe a 2 day so I can get more trigger time and hopefully the added cost will decrease the class size. I would recommend it to a friend.
