If not, anyone have any recommendations on some that are worth the extra travel time and expense? There is all kinds of firearms-related training available in Indiana now. The most notable are all of the classes held at the Boone County Sheriff's range every year. They host a variety of well-known instructors, including having Louis Awerbuck there for the entire month of August every year. The Sheriff also teaches several Gunsite offsite classes and his own 2-day defensive pistol class. I don't have a link, but you could find more information by using Google. There are a variety of other opportunities as well. My company does a lot of classes ranging from basic safety and marksmanship to more in-depth competition-oriented and defense-oriented classes. I'm doing a defensive rifle class on 30OCT10 in Terre Haute. Two of my associates are doing two of our defensive pistol classes near Warsaw on Saturday and Sunday. You can find out more about us (and others who are doing classes) on www.ingunowners.com or our web site www.adaptiveconsultingandtraining.com. Chances are, if you really want to receive instruction, you will find someone who meets your needs. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by email: [email protected] |

All kinds of training comes to Boone County. We are located right of I65 at the 138mm. Look up the Boone County Sheriffs Department website. I think Ken post the training available there. If you are looking for something specific let me know and I will see what is coming up.
Also I know for sure Ken's intro to defensive pistol is coming up in October. The ladies only class is Oct. 9/10 and his regular class is Oct. 23/24. These classes usually fill up quick and have waiting list but you can always call to check. |
| You can try Defense Training International. John Farnam is the lead instructor. Every May he comes to Sand Burr Ranch in Rochester, IN. Check his schedule on line to see if any of the very fine DTI courses meet your objectives. Also, Midwest Training Group is very good, based in Bloomington, Illinois-not a bad drive from Indiana. |

I forgot about DTI every spring! John is also doing his rifle class at Rochester in December. |

This a review of a class I took back in June-
Last Sunday I took the first ever class being put on by a new training company, Deepwater Defense Systems.
I took their Tactical Pistol Class. The owner and lead Instructor is Sgt. Todd Stinson, of the Georgetown Police Department. There was 11 attendees to the class. The class was structured like this- * Safety * Nomenclature * Cleaning and maintenance * Concealed carry * Drawing * Target acquisition * Marksmanship * Tactical reloading * Clearing malfunctions * Cover and concealment * Room clearing * Home/Auto defense It was a 6 hour course at a private range. Since everyone there was well versed in cleaning and maintenance, that was skipped and on to shooting we went. Some action shots-
Here is me shooting from cover at a steel plate-
While we only shot, maybe 200 rounds that day, I felt I learned more in 200 rounds than I have shooting more in the past, on my own. Todd is a no bullshit kinda of guy. He does not sugar coat it nor does he pull in punches. He's down to earth and easy to learn from. Never, at any time, did he or the other instructors there, talk down to you or over our heads. There was no "I'm great at what I do" speeches. If anyone wanted to run an exercise over again and again, they were allowed too. I never felt rushed in anyway. The instructors were very personable and worked with each student on any problems and never showed any frustration with anyone. At the end of the class, we did a dueling tree, pitting 2 shooters against each other, until there was a winner. That was fun. Todd provided cold water for the class and at the end took anyone who could attend, out for pizza afterward. At the end of the class, each person received a certificate, showing you attended the class and one thing that I think is very important. Todd gave out buisness cards with his personal cell phone number and this promise- If any person that took his class, is involved in a shooting, he wants you to call him after you have called the cops and your lawyer. If you have done everything you could and done it legally, he will help you, if needed to defend yourself. He will, if needed, attest to your training, or testify for you, again, if needed. I thought that was a big commitment on his part, to the class. All and all a class act. I learned alot and felt that I was a better shooter and a better "tactician" afterward. I have signed up for the Advanced Tactical Pistol course in the Fall. I can highly recommend them. Because of my motorcycle accident and dinged up back, I had to withdraw from the Fall Advanced Class...I'm going to try and take it next spring. |

Tactical Response comes to Seymour, IN every year in late Sept. You just missed Fighting Pistol and Advanced Fighting Pistol earlier this week. I just completed Fighting Pistol a couple weeks ago in Seymour. It was great. There's also the Boone Co. Sheriff as mentioned earlier. I also understand that Magpul comes to IN from time to time. |
