Anyone here familiar with how they work? An old racing buddy got himself picked up on a couple of drug charges. He tried to call me collect but the call disconnected me because I didn't have an "account". I called the jail but they don't pass messages, and informed me that I'm not on his visitors list so I don't think I can just go downtown and see him. What can I do? |

How well do you know him? And would he think you would bail him out? How did you find out it was drugs? Dealer? Priors? If a friend of mine got pinched for something minor like CC in a prohibited place, I would bail him out. But if he is habitual/absconder/dumbshit, let him soak. If you want to bail him out, you will have to arrange with a bondsman. I don't think they will let non-relatives to post bail, it has to be a bail bondsman. And DEFINITELY do NOT put any of your property up, only cash and if he is good for it. GET THE CASH BACK FROM HIM BEFORE LETTING HIM OUT OF YOUR CONTROL. My cousin was falsely arrested for armed robbery. Took him YEARS for restitution and expungement. Had to use a bondsman as it was a felony. 15k. He had NO PRIOR RECORD. Not even a speeding ticket. And he didn't own any firearm resembling the piece. No video, just wrong place at the wrong time. |

You can check what someone got booked for online. It tells you charge and bond. I have some of his racing gear that I was trying to sell for him. It would cover 10% of his bail no problem. I definitely don't want to be on the hook for the rest. Would I have to cosign at all? ETA: called and asked a bailbonds place, they all require co-signers. billybob/coconut, if ya ain't got nothing good to say, don't say nothin. This guy is one of the good ones, but going through a dark time in his life. |
If the man is messing around with dope then a bit of time away from the real world might do him some good. Not to say he deserves it... I've been to several Jails in the DFW and the only nice one was Grapevine. Co-signing for a bail is not a good idea unless you expect to take it over 100% because chances are you will in the end. |

Hell, if the stuff is his and you can sell it, do it. But bear in mind, you cosigning will have to watch his ass and make sure he makes his appearance. Do you know him that well? As in know where he lives, his NoK and where he banks? These are all questions you need to ask. Jail is school for criminals. The more it becomes normal for him, the more he will delve into that anti-social part of life. I used to assist in Christian outreach at a county lockup. I quit after a certain religion infected it, telling these criminals that they were locked up because of "the white man" didn't like the color of their skin. Every criminal in there was locked up because of "the white man"....the "evil white man". I'll leave it up to the reader to guess what religion they were of. |
Does this happen? I have yet to see it. |

Depending on the volume of drugs found, it will either be possesion or possesion with intent to sell. If he's got priors, as mentioned, he's SOL. If he doesn't and it's just possesion he should be able to get out on his own. I spent two days in Travis county jail (downtown lock up) sobering up. No TV, but two bolonga sammiches and some frosted flakes. Reguardless of who he is, it's the "what he's going through" that makes him a lead weight. You can be there for him as a buddy, but this is a road he will have to walk on his own. |
No, he doesn't have any family left. He's gonna spend some time there because I'm not willing to cosign a 10k bail bond. I think his dogs are in good hands. I need to find out what I can about the contents of his apt. |
