I live on the coast in Georgia.  We have lots of shrimp, and I have worn my arm out tossing a cast net with occasional success.  Plenty for fish bait, but quite a work out to fill the freezer for food.

A friend of mine in Texas mentioned a "test trawl" to pull behind my boat.

I had never heard of such a thing, so I searched to find it is a common tool in La.

What do I need to know about these things so I don't screw up buying one?

I have a 17' center console with a 90hp outboard.    The inland water is almost exactly like Venice and Grand Isle areas.  We have more sand, oysters, and deeper holes but basically the same.

I've been trawling a few times out in the Gulf, but with friends, I don't have a boat rigged for that, myself.

I think the only thing you'd need is to make sure that you reinforce the boat for pulling the trawl.  The boats I have seen, the owners usually make some sort of a frame to take all of the pressure.

I am not exactly sure if it needs to be attached anywhere other than the transom.  I'm sure some other LA boys can help you out.

Also, have you checked into the legality of it in your state?

Legal here.  $50 for up to an 18' commercial license.

10' bait trawl is just a fishing license away, but you can only get two quarts at a time and it is illegal to take them home to eat.

Wow.  I don't get the sense in that one.
